Every state & DC has licensing requirements which include taking prescribed courses, which last a few weeks to a few months, & passing a licensing exam. Different states have additional requirements such as passing a background check, being of a certain age, etc.
Find the website for your states real estate commission (or similar entity) for specific details.

Yes, education is required.
It depends on where you live, but all states require formal education. In my area for example, 90 hours of classroom is required. Once that is completed, you take a very comprehensive 500 question school exam and must pass that before you can take the State exam. Then you must pass the State exam. Next you go through fingerprinting and background check.
It is far more involved than most people realize. And you are exposed to alot of math as well as legal issues.
Once you finally get your license, you are required to maintain a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education each 2 years for your license renewal.
Like most businesses Real Estate has its ups and downs. The industry can pay well in good times, and not so well during soft markets. You have a lot of costs involved in marketing your business and then marketing your listings.
If you are interested check your local paper or yellow pages for "Real Estate Schools". They will give you all the info you need.
