Brake horsepower. The "brake" part comes from the sort of dynamometer used to measure it; the device used is basically a large brake that attaches straight to an engine. The dyno operator adjusts the brake to hold the engine at a steady RPM and measures how much torque the brake needs to hold the engine steady. They repeat this test throughout the entire engine RPM range and calculate how much horsepower it's making.
