Very interesting so far thanks, I do live in a very hard water area! and all my irons have tripped the fuse box (and its not the house wiring at fault)

I have had a few irons and none of them lasted very long until this one, it's a Tefal but that's not the reason. One day my wife saw me put tap water in it and she gave me a slap. Now I don't put tap water in it and this one has lasted for more than 5 years. P.S. I live in a hard water area (loads of calcium in the water for you foreign types...)

Buy the cheapest you can, and treat it as disposable. Cheaper irons tend to be lighter in weight, and hence easier to use. If the performance of a £15 iron is no better than that of a £75 iron, (and apart from "extras" there tends not to be much difference - you can get steam irons at this price), the £75 iron has to last 5 times longer to be worth it. If you find a bargain supply, then buy more than one.

Most irons only last until the guarantee runs out if you use it every day. They usually trip the circuit breaker at the fuse box, when 'their on their way out'.The best my partners had is Rowenta focus 2300w( last two irons were Morphy Richards they didn't last 6 months )

The irons I buy are Phillips Azure range. They last me years. I only got this new one because a friend borrowed the last one and melted her frock to hotplate. I've had this one two years and it is going strong. Mind you I said that about the kettle, and two days later it blew up.

Nothings built to last these days so you keep having to pay for a new one !!!
Tefal and Morphy Richards are the best ones...My last Iron was £80 and it was useless so I know what you mean !!
