Are you possibly manic? Meaning you have periods of wakefulness where you are active and seem to be inspired? I am a counselor and I know that I have experienced the same thing in the past...Are you on any medications that could cause excitability? Maybe you could talk this one over with your doctor. I know a lot of my "sleep deprived" epiphanies only turned out to be irrational distorted musings. I did write some great poetry when sleep deprived, it all rhymed and my other sleep deprived friends thought it was "profound"...;-)

Been there, done that...Take it easy on yourself, you need sleep so that you do not begin to have problems like narcolepsy or cataplexy brief periods of public unconsciousness that can be dangerous if it should happen when you drive a car or on your feet, or maybe on a job! If you blink when you are supposed to be aware, you could really harm yourself or someone else! Maybe you do not sleep well when you sleep? Nightmares, night terrors or walking in your sleep? A doctor may be able to give you some short term non addictive medication to help you break that cycle. Now I am going back to being just an answerer...I do therapy on sleep deprived and others at work...but this info may be useful to you...See below, and good luck!

When tired (i.e. sleep depprived) - you're running on adrenaline.
As adrenaline fuels the "fight or flight" responses in your body - it makes your mind more keen. Unfortunately - your body can't keep this up indefinitely and you will eventually become psychotic because sleeping allows your mind to work out things that it hasn't been able to resolve when you're awake.
