Well, you should read all you can about the Chinese economy, which is going through much the same 'marketization' process, and from roughly the same low level of development.

Recently, World Bank has recommended China's style of more interventionist / activist management to other developing nations ... in contrast to pure laissez-faire approach of unmitigated integration/openness to global finance etc.
