Because companies know that women will come to depend on the stuff. Then they can raise the prices and still have the guarantee that females will buy it.

make up can cost a lot if you use the expensive stuff (like the stuff at sephora's and MAC), and you wear a lot of it every day. the drug store stuff isn't that bad, and it's pretty inexpensive.

if you buy good stuff then it'll last you quite a while - i had a little slab of foundation that I have worn almost every day for months, and i'm still not out of it.
