Jim Thorpe is widely regarded as the greatest MALE athlete of the first half of the 20th century. If you count multi-sport talent as the main factor, then I believe that either Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders would be the greatest athlete of the second half of the century. Although you could make a case for Jordan, he just wasn't a very good baseball player.
The list above identifies the "greatest" in various sports, but I believe that "greatest athlete" means across multiple sports.

Don't forget Bob Mathias, who died just this weekend - College and Olympic great. My vote, though, has to go to Jim Thorpe.

Muhammed Ali, and Joe Namath have to be included simply for the excitement they caused, but also for the gifted athletes they were as well.
