Jim Thorpe is widely regarded as the greatest MALE athlete of the first half of the 20th century. If you count multi-sport talent as the main factor, then I believe that either Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders would be the greatest athlete of the second half of the century. Although you could make a case for Jordan, he just wasn't a very good baseball player.

The list above identifies the "greatest" in various sports, but I believe that "greatest athlete" means across multiple sports.

Don't forget Bob Mathias, who died just this weekend - College and Olympic great. My vote, though, has to go to Jim Thorpe.
