First, read a great (although poorly written) book called "Who Moved My Cheese". It's all about what you expect in life versus what really happened and how to deal with it going forward.
Second, you should really think hard about what you want your future to look like. Forget about the past and what you thought it would be, only focus on what you want it to be going forward. Are there any steps you can take, no matter how small, to start becoming the person you wanted to be or having the lifestyle you thought you'd have? Take one tiny tiny step toward that and you'll be amazed at how you'll feel so much more in control of your future.

Think again, its gonna be with you for a long time.
Better to make the best of what you have got than spend a life of misery worrying about what you would like it to be.
On the practical side:
Try a small change once a day if you cannot manage that do it on a weekly basis and do not get disappointed if you miss a target just try again or try something different.

I agree that it can be useful to identify the plus things in your life. Sorry to sound a bit NLP-ish but It is one of those "make a list things" where am I now, where do I want to be,what's the smallest change i can make that changes where I am now and then what would be the consequences if I got what I wanted. Then I think you have to set new but achievable goals. The hard part is changing old habits (i speak from experience) as that's what keeps you "stuck in a rut".
Sometimes it can help to temporarily lower an expectation and see if that expectation can be exceeded before trying for the next level (psychobabble-ish I know-but this sort of thinking is helpful to me).

Look back in time, ask yourself where you went wrong, maybe didn't complete one thing or another, and set your goals. First putting wrongs right, then start afresh. Plan out what you want to do, where you want to be in a month from now, then three months, then six months then a year and after that three years. Write a diary, jot down what you are doing towards achieving your aim and go for it! Don't forget to congratulate yourself when you see you have regained control over your life and are going in the right direction.

nobody has the life they thought they would have. too many things are uncontrollable, random, or spontaneous. plus, to make a fixed plan for your life and stick to it 100% would actually be boring. you would always know what to expect.
take advantage of the things that have changed from your expectations to determine if there is some good coming from it. certainly, it's not boring. is it better? if not, steer yourself back to your original plan. if so, stick with what's best. that way you always have something positive supporting your thought process as life moves forward.

we all imagine that we'd be somewhere different right now, but life isn't as easy as some others might tell you. You just need to stand up for yourself and defend your place in life. So people accept you and you feel happier. Acceptance is what some people look for.

Not everything goes as planned in life, which is why you need to make life what you want it to be. If you have any fears, don't let them make your decisions for you: you make them.
