No great thinkers are still here, they just don't hold the mobs interest anymore. Which is sad, I think I know how you feel. Sometimes it feels hopeless, you look around at the world and you know it doesn't have to be the kind of place that it is, it could be majorly better and at times in the past it has been. I think thinking, reading(non fiction too, lol) people are in the minority.
I would be willing to wager you can find a schizophrenic homeless guy more intelligent than current role models in mainstream culture. It is stupid but it is cooler to be like George Clooney than it is to be like brave men like Dante.
I have found a few great thinkers on Yahoo answers and it has made thinking a little less lonely.

I think that it's more about perceptions. A lot of the greatest minds today are working in science and fields that are quite esoteric, so we don't particularly hear about them. Also, that list of yours covers a millenia and a half. Last century we had Albert Einstein, who said a lot of profound things besides E=mC2, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Karl Marx, Michel Foucault, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, some Germans who I really should get around to reading, a lot of scientists who I used to read about -- and that's just my personally-biblio-experienced beginning. We still have Umberto Eco, Stephen Hawkings, Bob Dylan and Zinedine Zidane and thousands more that we've never even heard of. In time, they'll be written about and schoolkids will draw moustaches on their pictures.
P.S. Descartes was wrong. And he certainly didn't 'show and prove.' He accepted certain prevailing cultural assumptions as inherently true and went from there.

I don't think that great thinkers are a thing of the past. I think that the population is so large and so many cultures have surfaced that these people get lost in the shuffle sometimes. We are in very lazy times, people lead generally happy and fulfilled lives and most don't have a need to know more in fear that what they learn will ruin the lifestyles they have now.

It is unlikely to be a thing of the past...every generation has it's original thinkers... though they may not be quite as famous...as that particular group... when you think about it ,most famous people become more famous after their death... not during their life...and perhaps not all great thinkers desire fame at all....so you may never hear of them at all... but by no means does this mean they do not exist...

No. They are, in fact, more contemporary to us than the thinkers of today. But you are right. People let themselves manipulated by whoever wants to do it.

well when you over medicate kids and have to edit yourself for PC it really dumbs down things alot. da vinci was obviously a ADD kid and well most likely had many other "learning disablilities" some of the most creative people i know have some trouble learning which is why they have the creative copeing mechanism. which makes them creative in many other ways.

good for you! conficious said, " he who knows what he knows and he who knows what he does not know is typical of one who knows. " the more you know the more you find out you don't know so just keep on thinking for yourself. be certain to hold to your convictions unless or until you find out you are wrong. just remember to tolerate others who may disagree with you as arguement never solved anything but discussions allow teaching and learning to take place for the benefit of all.
