Noone I know has vomited in labour - and my midwife says in her 25 year experience as a midwife its not actually that common - she says it happens to about a handful of women a year out of the 100s that are treated at the hospital. But I read so many birth stories in which women say they were sick in labour, I don't know what to think.

As I'm an emetophobe (phobia of vomiting) its actually scaring me as much - if not more - than the thought of the pain!

Is it mainly due to pain releif or to other reasons and is there any way you can avoid it? My midwife says that as I'm going to the hospital to have my baby they can maybe give me a shot of antiemetic.

It's not very common, but some people do. Your midwife my give you a list of things to bring with you to the hospital and one of the things they will tell you to bring is a bag for the car incase you do vomit. Most people that do only throw up because of the pain. I don't have morning sickness or anything but there have been a lot of complications with my pregnancy and when I get the sharp pains in my stomach that seems to be the only time it happens to me. I really wouldn't worry since worrying isn't good for you or the baby.

Good Luck

I vomited only after they gave me Demerol. And only once even though I had more than one shot. Actually they had to put the Demerol directly into my IV before I threw up, the first shot in my bum didn't so anything as far as pain relief or vomiting. I also have never heard of anyone actually vomiting during labour. I am guessing that since you are using a mid wife that you are trying to go as naturally as possible so I don't think that you too much to worry about.
I am glad you you asked your medical professional this question before you asked it on here.

I`ve had 4 kids, with 3 of them, I had epidurals.I did`nt get sick with any of those. But with my second child, I had no pain relief, and she was a sunny-side-up baby ( not to be confused with breech ) and I did get sick.so my conclusion is that the incredible pain of a baby coming out facing the wrong way, combined with the stress of a long labor is probably the cause. I could see how a large or spicy meal could also do that, though , so to be safe, avoid that.

You can avoid it by not taking narcotics to relieve your pain, and by remaining CALM through out labor.

Usually its during trasition that most women vomit, because their contractions pick up and the intensity increases, so they get tense and end up vomiting as a result.

If you can remain calm, and focus on the job ahead and not on the fear of the unknown you will be fine.

Ive never personally known anyone who threw up during labor, but i hear about it from time to time. And generally its only at that one part of labor, not a continuos event. Eat light foods, drink cold water and remain calm.

You'll be fine.

During my first labour I vomited but it was due to the awful gas and air.
The second time I didn't have any pain relief and didn't get sick at all.
You'll be fine, don't worry. Good luck.

People who vomit are ones who didn't believe that they were that close to delivery and ate a big meal before they ended up being rushed to the hospital. The stress and the cramps make them vomit. Eating lightly when you are close to term would minimize the chance of that unpleasant surprise.

vomtting is common durring pregnancy. i am not 100% sure it is durring labor though. I know certain fods and smells can make you vomit while you are pegnant, but try asking a different midwife or ob/gyn if it is common. good luck and i wish you and yur baby the best
