I am looking for a mild anti depressant - non addictive - for my grand daughter who is studying in University. She feels so "down" all the time and is aways near to tears. It needs to be a natural remedy as I do not want her to resort to medication. She is 20 years old.

Hi,I hope this helps. There are several natural herbs for depression. One is the St.Johnswort, also 5-htp,and Sam-E.But I would also get her on a good vitamin B-complex W/Extra B-12.Depression causes stress on the body,on top of the stress she's already experiencing in college. The stress, depression, and probably not eating right, will rob the body of the B vitamins.Whichever of the herbs mentioned above should be taken on an empty stomach,in the a.m. After she eats a little something or drinks some milk, she can take the B-vitamins.Make sure to tell her not to take the vitamins to late,as she might have trouble falling asleep. She will probably notice the vitamins working faster than the herbs. Also tell her not to be alarmed when she urinates, the B's are eleminated through the kidneys. She'll notice it's bright yellow. Now with the herbs, they may take awhile to notice a difference,up to three months or more. Natueal remedies take much longer to notice a difference than prescription drugs. If she starts out with trying the St.Johnswort first, make sure she knows NOT to spend allot of time in the sun,or go in tanning beds, she will get sunburned. The best place to get your vitamins and herbs is at a health foods store. They are more pure, and have less fillers. If you patronize one store, they can get to know your needs and help you better. The B-vitamins that i like to take,as someone that suffers from depression also,is by a company called "Solaray".They also make St.Johnswort.Price wise they're about in the middle, but an excellent product.Just try the vitamins and one of the herbs first.Don't let them at the store talk you into a bunch of other stuff.Start out simple and go from there. And if you are trying to be sold allot of things, try another clerk to help you.You want someone that has you and your grand daughter's needs in mind, not just trying to make a sale. And also tell your grand daughter to stay away from drinking allot of sodas and sugerary things. They will give her highs and lows and she dosen't need that.Try to have her eat as many fruits and veggies as she can. I hope this helps her. She's lucky to have a grand mother that cares. Good luck, and Blessings

Wal-Mart and some dollar stores carry it, but personally, from having taken it in the past, it did not help me and not all herbs are bound to work. Some can have some serious side effects. St. John's Wort could interfere with other medications a person takes and you could be especially sensitive to sunlight. A combination of medication and therapy helped me because I felt the same way about a year ago. The medication does not need to be long-term, although it may take about a month until it gets into your granddaughter's system as with most antidepressants. You'll also begin to notice a difference once she has been taking it a while and I'm sure she will too.

St. Johnswort isn't exactly an Anti-dressant herb. It is used by some Homeopaths instead of Prosac. St. Johnswort makes some people
sleepy. Did you know that both Cocoa and Cinnamon are Anti-depressants? Give your sister some dry Cinnamon 3 tblps a day!
Or toast with Cinnamon and sugar.. here make sure the sugar over powers the Cinnamon! You can mix Cinnamon and the Cocoa together if you don't have enough of one or the other! Another way to cheer your sister up is doing something extremely humourous! Check with your local health food store they'll be glad
to help. Oh the health food store is where to get St.John's Wort.. Oh by the way that removes worts and pimples too!

you should be able to get it at any natural health store. St John's tea or the essentail oil. Give it a try. :-)

Jasmine and lavendar also work for mild depression.

mix 3 drops jasmine, 6 drops lavendar and 4 drops bergamot to make a room fragrance. The jasmine and lavendar eases anxiety and the bergamot refreshes the mind.

My husband takes St Johns Wort and we get it from walmart.

Just check up on side effects or if it interacts with any other meds before she takes it. :)

Honestly, I was on paxil and now prozac, just low does, and it has since improved my quality of life. A doctor can help! It's not that bad, it's a chemical imbalance that it NOT your granddaughters fault. With all the preservatives and other unnatural crap in our foods and drinks these days, who came blame our bodies for being so out of whack?

NO! Not a good idea. I work in a pharmacy, and if she takes St. Johns Wort and happens to go to a psychiatrist... it can have very serious interactions with REAL antidepressants as well as with birth control. This is NOT a good idea for someone her age...

st. johnswort can be bought over the counter at pretty much any pharmacy or stores like GNC. Please tell your grand-daughter to follow the directions and to avoid taking it if she is on other medications...it may lead to a dangerous drug interaction. speak to a doctor or pharmacist about which medications are safe to take while taking st. johnswort.

It doesn't work according to recent studies. Try Sam-E instead or take her to a Dr. If she becomes suicidal you will regret not allowing her to take medication.

Any pharmacy and even Wal-Mart carry it. It's an OTC and not expensive.
