I am American, and my #1 girl is from Japan. If we married, I've seen brides' clothing: white kimono and proper accessories topped with a uchikake robe that may be solid white or have various patterns on a background of white, gold, orange or red. Miyuki says the colors and things shown symbolize various things, e.g. white=purity, red=happiness, cranes & pines=longevity, etc. Her surname Komatsu means "Small Pine", so I'll probably get her a uchikake with pines. I could ask her about my clothing, but I want to surprise her. I have kimono in black, grey and brown and matching haoris. I have several hakama, plain and striped. My tabi are blue, black and white. My zori have black straps. I also have three antique samurai kamishimo and hakama. Do you think that any of my japanese clothing is proper to wear to a Japanese wedding, or should I buy more. Perhaps Miyuki can judge the best answers to this question. Silly answers result in deleted questions.

The traditional garb for the groom would be Hakama. These are big baggy legged trousers, you can see some in samurai movies on the top he wears a coat rather like a happy coat fastened with a big tassel, on his feet he wears white tabi, socks/indoor shoes thingys with the big toe separated (but still on his foot LOL), if you see what I mean. They will sometimes change into modern western clothes half way through the ceremony/party

Couples in Japan enjoy weaving both the ritual of Japanese wedding tradition with modern Western culture. Because Japanese weddings are considered a life event, the wedding ceremony and reception are usually very elaborate. By infusing both ancient old Japanese wedding traditions with borrowed modern Western culture, couples create an unforgettable wedding day.

If you want to surprise her, ask a male member of her family. Honestly though, you should probably talk it over with her. In most cases, the wedding is more for the woman than the many anyway.

It will depend on the type of wedding you are going to have. If you are having a traditional western wedding then you wear a tuxedo or suit. If she wants a traditional Japanese wedding then you would whatever traditional grooms wear in Japan.
