Excellent question. There is an increase in violence since the War on Terror began. You are absolutely right. It is a war with an abstract concept. The terrorists do not wear uniforms.
Where is Bin Laden? My guess would be in the "holy" cities of Qom or Mashad in Iran where we cannot search.
Your conclustion is, "Without a war on terror, these attacks would not have happened." This is true in a manner of speaking, however, the Muslim agenda of Islamification would still be going on. Perhaps you will understand more clearly if you study the references from the following information.
Islam is insidious, it encroaches on a culture slowly and deliberately. You may be interested to read a document which discusses the degrees of Islam in great detail (50+ pages) -- "From dawa to jihad - the various threats from radical Islam to the democratic legal order":
http://www.fas.org/irp/world/netherlands/dawa.pdf
The one page essay by Dr. Walid Phares, "Islamic concept of Al-Taqiyah to infiltrate and destroy kafir countries" explains how a convert will become a terrorist:
http://www.fisiusa.org/fisi_News_items/news109.htm
Phares states, "It [taqiyah] is done to prevent the new converts from seeing the real face of Islam; at least until their faith or mental conditioning is strong enough to make them turn against their own country and people."
Not all Muslims blow up things, yet "jihad in the cause of Allah" "jihad fee sybil Allah" is "fard ayn" "compulsory duty" for all Muslims. Why? There are rules from the Quran for combattive jihad. Read this:
http://www.notislam.com/id8.html
What does the tape from Gadahn mean? Does anyone realize that Muslims are supposed to "dawa" "invite others to Islam" before jihad?
According to al-Mawardi an 11th Century Shafi'i jurist:
The mushrikun [infidels] of Dar al-Harb (the arena of battle) are of two types: First, those whom the call of Islam has reached, but they have refused it and have taken up arms.… Second, those whom the invitation to Islam has not reached, although such persons are few nowadays since Allah has made manifest the call of his Messenger…it is forbidden to…begin an attack before explaining the invitation to Islam to them, informing them of the miracles of the Prophet and making plain the proofs so as to encourage acceptance on their part; if they still refuse to accept after this, war is waged against them and they are treated as those whom the call has reached…
In the Hidayah, vol. II. p. 140 (Hanafi school):
It is not lawful to make war upon any people who have never before been called to the faith, without previously requiring them to embrace it, because the Prophet so instructed his commanders, directing them to call the infidels to the faith, and also because the people will hence perceive that they are attacked for the sake of religion, and not for the sake of taking their property, or making slaves of their children, and on this consideration it is possible that they may be induced to agree to the call, in order to save themselves from the troubles of war… If the infidels, upon receiving the call, neither consent to it nor agree to pay capitation tax, it is then incumbent on the Muslims to call upon God for assistance, and to make war upon them, because God is the assistant of those who serve Him, and the destroyer of His enemies, the infidels, and it is necessary to implore His aid upon every occasion; the Prophet, moreover, commands us so to do."

It hasn't. You need to do a study and see that terrorism has been rampant throughout the world for a decade or more now. But the liberal media and the pacificts of the world didn't want you to react to it. Now that we have an admistration in power in the US that is trying to combat it, the liberal media reports every incident in every corner of the world to prove some idiotic point that's not true. Though the media would have you believe that terrorism has risen, I would contend that it hasn't, that it has been stifled to some degree, and that they will never stop because they are commanded to kill the infidels and that includes you (even if you are a converted Muslim..because you are a capitalist...you deserve to die in their eyes). A liberal idea to appease the terrorists so that they are the last to be devoured. Lets appease them so they will pick on someone else awhile. What a coward! I'm glad that I voted for a president that has a back bone and conviction to fight those that would do evil on innocent women and children. Those that would cut off someone's head in a slow, gruesome, torturous way, and air it for the world to see.
Have you ever studied a war? Study the Revolution, WWI, WWII, any way...This is a picnic compared to those wars. Those wars lasted for many years, the death toll was astronomical, and the mistakes that were made were enormous as well, but those were just wars and so is this one.
It's not an abstract concept. Was 911 and those towers and 3000 dead an idea? Are chemical weapons buried in Iraqi soil an abstract? Are mass graves with men, women, and children an abstract? Is a dictator that terrorized his people, his neighbors and gave money to the families of bombers that blew themselves up in Israel an abstract? Is a man that thumbed his nose at the world, the UN, and inspectors for TWELVE YEARS an abstract?
Do some studying! Grow a backbone! Listen to some talk radio (not some lunatic, whiney show like Air America). Break out some history books! Look up terrorists acts in the past two decades! Compare Hitler, Sadam, the leader of Iran, the leader of N Korea, and Osama Bin Laden....and every other tyrant in history. There are some strong corelations. Quit thinking with your weak, yellow bellied fear. Do some research, find the fact, and stand up for FREEDOM.

It has increased? Maybe the way to look at it would be is how much worse would it have been if we had not begun a war against it?
It is not an abstract concept... there are real terror events happening that have a place, a time, and cause harm. Therefore, we work to prevent them, like the spread of fascism in World War II.
Where bin Laden was once the key and a mastermind, our efforts have greatly diminished his effectiveness he though he is still alive.
They are doing an INCREDIBLE job in war rooms throughout the world. Think about how hard it would be to stop evebts that basically could be anyone in any place. I believe they have been greatly minimized and am amazed at the effectiveness of stopping terror events before they happen.
What is your position all about? It only harms a concerted effort and shows the effects of negativism, which has no place in all of this. It borders on lunacy to say that the events you mentioned above would not have happened if there were no war on terror! How do you prove that? That is delusional. There would have been much more, much worse as they would have continued and stepped up with no oppostion. No doubt about that... what are you thinking?

Terrorism attacks have not increased, rather declined. Our "awareness" of the whole concept of terrorism and terrorist activity etc. has increased which makes it appear as though the attacks have increased.
It's like this. You know how when you buy a different car, maybe used, maybe new, and soon after you start driving it you start to notice other similar cars on the road? Some a little different. Others just like yours? The other cars were always there. But, your awareness has increased.
And with respect to terrorism, this increased awareness is a good thing. That's why I have such a hard time with the previous administration's lack of dealing with terrorism and just pretending it was OK as long as they were not on our soil.
During the Carter and Clinton administrations, we were going backwards when it came to the war on terror. We were still into the war, we just had our head in the sand and were not admitting it. By not admitting it, we were not sharpening our awareness skills needed to be effective combatants.
And as far as Bin Laden is concerned, his time is coming. And until it does, what a life to lead. Hiding in a cave? Hero or not. Martyr or not. He is in a good position for us, bad for him.
Within the past 24 hours Al Quida's #2 man is captured in Iraq.
And you can be critical?

1 - Coincidence - it was already increasing (look at the '90s) and was going to continue increasing (at least if the Islamo-Fascists had their way).
2 - No - to the contrary, we are winning it big-time. Given what's happening in total, it's almost defeatist to think we're losing. It's as though any indication that the enemy is still alive at all is a manifestation of our "losing". That's just Weak Sister thinking. Why not focus instead on what's been (and is being) accomplished and then ask if we're winning or losing?
3 - It's not so abstract after all, is it? There seem to be plenty of real people with real aims and goals and real weapons, don't there? Don't be misled by the "abstract" argument - it's nothing more than another smokescreen whose purpose is to get us to give up and go home because "we can't win". It's nonsense.
4 - He's in a cave somewhere near the Afghan-Paki border making videotapes. This is the best of all possible worlds as he's effectively neutered - no longer in command and not martyred either. Good for him - he's finally found his true calling: hiding out like the common criminal he is.
5 - Lotsa reasons including the fact that catching one person under the circumstances is very difficult. Also, see #4 above.
6 - Focusing on the hundreds of cells world-wide that were spawned by Bin Laden in the '90s while we sat here and watched about 14,000 would-be jihadis be processed through Al-Qaedas training camps in the Sudan and in Afghanistan.

Yes, we are losing the war. Do you feel safer? Read the book "Overthrow" by Steven Kinzer and find out how terrorism CREATED our way of life in the West (at least in the Americas...Western Europe in its present state was likewise created by conquest and plunder from Alexander to Ceasar to Napoleon to Hitler...just for starters) I wish there WERE a true "war" (how about the word "movement") against "terrorism" (yes it is just a concept) cause then there might be a glimmer of hope for real peace and justice in the world. Might does not make right. Neither does finger pointing. When we (or at least our "leaders") learn that, terrorism everywhere might stop increasing.
Bin Laden is no angel but hasn't much to do with the BIG PICTURE. People have to stop being so gullible and swallowing wholesale every word dropped by the corporate mouthpiece media (read "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky, for starters...) He won't be caught because he's supposed to remain the straw man (or at least a major one) for our own misdeads (imposing our way of life on everyone with the dollar and the bomb)..... I say he had nothing to do with 911, and the official story about that event is a lie, to cover up what really happened and why it really happened (see "Loose Change" by Dylan Avery, free on Utube)...Up there in the war room they are sucking up to the corporate masters from the WTO. The war against Iraq happened to satisfy their contributions to W's SE-lection!

A research done by the nonpartisan, nonprofit Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism, said the number of al-Qaida members has jumped from 20,000 in 2001 to 50,000 today. the average weekly attacks in Iraq have jumped from almost 200 in spring 2004 to more than 600 this year, numbers provided by the liberal-oriented Brookings Institution think tank
Do you know why all that? because 9/11 was made by a gang of terrorists, not accepted by 99% of muslims, some of them only found it ok for the american blind support to Israel, so let america pay once 4 killing Arabs taking their lands (not for envieng the American ppl or culture- for envy why only USA, the Europian ppl, Australian and Japanise ppl r living even better)
so the stupid policy of keep invading muslim countries, calling them terrorists are brings nothing but more recruits to bin laden, prove the terrorists point of view that they r defending islam from the crusador war from the west .. so, is that what you want?
in other words, the main idea of muslim terrorists is that "we, muslims, are being hit by a crusador war from the west , all of it , so we have to defend islam and fight back all of the westerns " ..... of course this is a very extreme idea , that only 0.001% of muslims belive in .... but by the stupid thing america is doing now , it prove that extreme point of view , turns the moderate muslim into one of them who will be one day "freedum fighters" rather than "terrorists" becuase defending yourself cant be terrorism
and that is the stupid idea of Bush , he is forcing us(muslims) to fight America BACK , and only increase the terrorists numbers , so is that what America want ? instead of finding the real reason for terrorism , or even dealing with it as an act from some gang , it widness it and fight everywhere , turn friends into enemies ?
p.s : 1991, Cairo , Egypt, i still remember my dancing and the people euophoria in the first day when the allied armies hit everything in Iraq and begain the war , even the Egyptian and the Syrian armies were fighting WITH USA against iraq ... now that all changed .. i'm sorry for that, because of that stupid policy who benefits only Israel and against everybody else including america

I am wondering where you are seeing terrorism in the west? It keeps getting attempted but is busted before it happens. The Brits have busted their second group and the Americans have busted their second group both countries did this in the last month and a half. Terrorism is harder to do in a civilized country.

even if he is caught that wouldn't make much difference he is just one man, terrorism is fast becoming an ideology and it can only be countered by equally forceful thought and that is peace and tolerance but our so called world leader have failed to grasp this concept..
