Stereotypes are like defensive mental resources.
When u ignore something, u feel scared about it, still u need to organize it inside ur mind to classify that "new" thing in to something (a previous category) ...this is the way our minds works..and only people who is aware of this might avoid this failure: still is not easty.
This is also the psicological root of agresiveness and racism.
If u want to learn more about it u might read about the law of enthropy and how it applies in lingüistics...
By the way...I apologize for my bad english.

The number one reason -IGNORANCE. People are much more inclined to answer without thinking and to do so means to offer a blanket statement (GENERALIZATION/STEREOTYPE) as the resolve for everything.
Ofcourse, not everyone is the same. Even identical twins may be the same- genetically- but, have totally different perceptions and ideas with regard to the same exact question.
To all the viewing audience -NEVER BE AFRAID TO LEARN. TAKE CARE. ENJOY!

We like things to be ordered in some fashion. Even you have distinguished groups that you feel people want you to fit into, but you have people you relate with better than others, and have in fact made a group. It does not mean you agree on everything, but that there is a commonality in your perceptions. That is what people recognize, categorize, and stereotype.
Much like profiling, if there wasn't a profile to start with, no profiling could be done.

You're absolutely right. I don't think I fit in any group. I hate to see people start out there questions with " Why do Christians always...? (or athiests, or Muslims, or white people or black people, or any other number of "groups".) We should remember that we're all just people, and those labels don't mean a thing, and none of us "always" does anything.

I believe it is our instinct to do so. We categorize everything else why not people. I think it also helps us determine who to spend time with and who not to, just a part of decision making process. Sometimes we are wrong when we do it and sometimes we are right. I don't fit into any groups really, don't need to but, some people need to to reaffirm their identity. It is as good as it is bad.

I heard that the hardest thing to open is a closed mind. If everyone could learn to be alittle more open-minded, it would only add character. What's to lose from experience? I'd rather be a more rounded person than square and stuck in one corner. Just my opinion :)

There's two kinds of people in the world. People who put people into groups, and people who get put into groups.
