Your coils are most likely in need of a cleaning. Both outside and inside parts have coils that require periodic cleaning. You can do this with plain old water.

Make sure the unit is off. The outside unit can be cleaned with a hose. Do not spray hard, or you can damage the fins. The coils on your air handler you will need to wipe with a cloth. Rinse in a bucket of water or use a small splash of cleaner in a 5 gallon bucket of water if your coils are really dirty.

Your coils should be cleaned once a year.

If this does not correct the problem you are low on freon.

Yes, it could be the freon, but not always. Before you get someone to check the freon level, take the bottom cover off the air handler ( usually where your filter goes ) and check to see if your coils are clean. Also make sure your fan is running inside the air handler. Usually when an ac unit freezes, it is due to no air flow. Normally your freon level stays good unless you have a leak of some kind.

This is usually caused when the unit is low on freon. Have a serviceman check the unit. Also, clean the evaporator coils with a garden hose.

This was happening in my unit as well, have maintenance check the freon levels. If you continue to run the a/c unit after its frozen you could burn out the compressor unit which is fairly expensive to fix.
