I agree. Salt works like magic. Next time you see one, sprinkle salt all over it. They get all dried out and shrivel up. I used to love torturing slugs when I was a kid!

There are a couple of things, short of outright killing them, that snails and slugs really don't like.

One is copper tape. Evidently when they crawl across it, they get a little electrical shock due to the way their slimy little bodies interact with the copper.

To use this method, the copper tape would have to go all around whatever parts of the hutch are touching the ground, so there's no way snails could crawl into the hutch without encountering copper tape.

Another things our slimey friends don't care for is diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is made up of the skeletons of tiny microscopic creatures, and to quote one source, "to insects, it's like tiny razors". To humans or rabbits, it's harmless though.

So. One way to go would be lining the areas of your hutch that touch the ground with copper tape, then sprinkling a layer of diatomaceous earth around that. (You'd need to sprinkle fresh diatomaceous earth when the stuff got scattered around and the layer got thin.)

Both of these items are available at hardware stores and garden centers.

Best of luck!

Bury a jam jar up to the neck into the soil near the Rabit hutch. Half fill with beer dregs, preferably from a pub barrel. slugs and snails are attracted to the yeast and fall in

Definitely salt and / or beer in something at the bottom of each leg of the hutch ... other than that, put the hutch in the middle of a gravelled area - the big gravel is best because they don't like slithering over it.

Put a sign up "no slugs or snails allowed"

Or you could just put a half full glass of beer outside, and the slugs and snails climb up and fall in and drown.
It does work!

The sign is less cruel though!

buy a better hutch with smaller holes.
Or put salt etc. down.
does this really happen? THe snails in our garden always reach the hutch and turn away again. I think they're scared of hte rabbits. (nibbs would probably eat them).

You should bring your rabbit indoors. Have you ever read anything about flystrike? It's an awful way for a rabbit to die. House rabbits can live to be 10 years old and they become a close member of the family.

if your hutch is on legs set the legs on a jar lid and put salt in it. Sprinkle salt around it if not. Also put out a low container of beer the slugs will get drunk and drown (really)

beer is good way to rid your garden of slugs and snail...Newcastle brown ale in particular...this is no joke...try it around the hutch..don't let the rabbit drink it tho unless you are planning on rabbit and ale pie for supper.
