Ive just told my son about Steve Irwin. Hes crying his wee heart out and wont watch Croc files today. Is being honest always the best thing to do. I didnt want him hearing from the News or friends at school.

you might tell your son that Steve Irwin went to another plane of existance as he had to explore and teach others there so he had to leave this plane of existance.

Sure, what you did was fine. Better to hear it from mom than on the news. This way, he can cry in the privacy of his own home and have you there to comfort him.

How old is he? Might be a good time to talk about life and death in an age-appropriate manner for your son. Unfortunately, we all have to learn how to deal with this at some point.

Good luck.

It's alright; you did the right thing. It's better for him to just let it out now. Besides, crying is good for you. It relieves stress. Not only that, but its better for him to know Steve Irwin die than let him know later on. Don't worry, I'm sure you're a good mother.

I think honesty is always the best policy.. You can put a mother's/father's love with your answer. Which may help with the issue a bit. Death is a part of living. It's the one thing we KNOW will happen to us all. Give him time to grieve, and be there for him as much as possible. My 13 year old sister is taking it really hard also.

You definitely did the right thing. Being honest is always a good thing especially with your kids. It is part of life for someone like that to die. He'll get over it in a couple of days or so.

You did do the right thing. Learning to accept a loss is never easy. At his age its even that much harder. He will be ok, just try to explain to him this is a part of life. Then god forbid, next time something like this happens then he might handle it a little better.
He'll be ok Mom

You definitely did the right thing. I believe in bein as honest as you can to your children. This lets your son know, as a mom, that he can always trust you.

You did the right thing. He needs to mourn....even though he did not know the man personally. Your son should be allowed to feel the feelings of sadness. He will be fine.
