A multiprocessor system has you putting two identical processors into one motherboard. A dual core processor has two cores built onto one processor.

Dual core is better than multiprocessor for home use. For servers some still prefer multiprocessor systems because the tasks may be better seperated since the processors aren't sharing cache.

Dual core is typically better than single core because you can seperate tasks onto one processor or another allowing your computer to do twice as much work theoretically. Some (very few) programs may be run on both cores simultaneously for faster performance. Older programs may not function well or at all on both cores so you must set the affinity on those older programs.

A single core computer has one processor. A Multi-Processor computer has (you guessed it) multiple processors. A Duo Core processor from Intel has two processors cores inside one "box", so you can basically plug two processors into one socket.

Having two processors allows you to process more data at the same time, since you have two processors running, so work is done faster.

dual core can multitask and perform faster. Don't get pentium D though. It is a watered down versino of pentium 4. They took that and stuck 2 p4's together.. its a piece of crap. i suggest going to AMD or wait for the core 2 duo to come out. it is suppposedly the best processor in the world.

because duo core is 2 processors per socket
whereas multi processors have one processor per socket but multiple sockets

duo cores are better because they are faster produce less heat and use less electricity.
