Because secrecy is one of the most valuable tools you can have in a "cutting edge" research environment. Just as with Stealth technology, the more people that can be coaxed into dismissing weird stuff in the sky as "UFOs" or "aliens", the less serious investigation there will be into covert research. And that, all in all, is a good thing.

They don't think the public could handle such knowledge, without mass panic. UFOs are the number one government cover up.
