Most DIY stores sell Sonic Cat deterants, the best thing about these is that they do not get washed away in the rain, and are not seasonal like some bushes you can plant.

A couple things I've tried:
Spreading citrus peels
Sprinkling cayenne pepper
Planting Coleus-Canina
The best for me was the cayenne and the coleus-canina. The cayenne did add some color to ground until it rained or I watered. The coleus canina has a strong odor, so one plant seemed to work for my entire front garden area.

moth balls or some citrus fruit....cut up oranges or lemons and put them around the outside. Cats don't like the smell of either and should eventually leave your garden alone.
