they are sweet little pets and quite low maintenace but do need caring. here are some imp things you need to remember :

you must feed them twice a day - DO NOT overfeed

you must clean out the water atleast once in two days and if the water gets dense too quickly then once day with clean water

you must place atleast 2-3 different 'rock' structures in the tank so that the turtles can climb on it. in winter months you may also need to keep a light bulb over your tank

turtles need to be out of the water every now again (let them decide) as they are amphibians - cold blood creatures.

dont let your visitors poke the turtle when he goes in the shell... !! that stresses them big time. if you pick up a turtle and it is struggling away with his legs, put him back - you are stressing him and this will reduce his life !!

once you get used to them and they get used to you - you will have a good time.. you can carry them in your arms, let them walk over on you ! watch them eat, watch them grow !

and yes if you let one out of its tank - KEEP AN EYE on him ! they tend to go under beds / sofas and can get lost. if such a thing happens, look for them and put them back in the tank. if your turtle looses moisture it will die

take care - remember to enjoy and love your pet !!

You should definately get a turtle! If you do get a red eared, red bellied, or yellow bellied slider. They usually will live 5-10 years if you take good care of them. Make sure to get a baby one too. Get a small glass tank and a bag of stones. Get the really little colorful stones. They like to dig sometimes and the larger stones are to big for little turtles to move. Make sure you choose to get them from a reliable pet store and get a light to put abve your tank. Not too bright though. They sell them at most pet stores. Get a filter if you don't want to clean it often. And get the baby sized pellets of turtle food. It's ok if they do not eat the first few days you have them, they are still getting used to the eniorment and might not be ready to eat yet! Feed them everyday, follow the instructions on the container. Make sure to put in a rock that will rise slightly above the water. They like to climb and sit on them to bask in the light. Fill the water about two times their height. Take them out and play with them sometimes! They like it. Hold them with your thumb and index finger in between their two legs with a finger on each side or just place them in your cupped hand! They like grapes if they're larger and lettuce any age! Only give them treats once in a while. Just easy to chew veggies and grapes. To many treats will make them sick. If you have anymore questions ask a employee at the pet shop or even look online for ore information! Hope I helped!

I've no idea about much but do remeber that we had some kind of turtle at nursery school when I was little that eventually had to be given away as they harbour dangerous bacteria on their shells, also some turtles can be quite snappy, check carefully on breeds before making a decision, also consider how big a space they need v you can give them- have fun!

they are the longest living beings on earth, its a big commitment to get a turtle.

land turtles need a dry vivitarium, with a watering bowl imbeded in the sand/dirt, and a leaning rock it can get under and come out in a corner. land turtles don't need much water, but they need to be able to lean their heads down and submerge it in water to drink.

land turtles get big, so after 3 years you can let them wander around the house if you don't have a dog. after 5 years you can let them wander outside if you have a fence

water turtles need an aquarium setup, lots of water with some floating platforms, or a beech type thing, and lots of plants.

All turtles catch respatory problems easily, and you should get them checked for saminella, expecially if you have kids or preteens in the house.

There is nothing bad with having a turtle. If a turtle is what you want. You can keep them in a kind of special aquarium (search the web) an you don't have to handle them often. They love to eat fish...On the other hand if you want to get a Tortoise...(the land ones)...they are quite messy and their poo STINKS VERY BAD!!!! Unless you have a big garden where they won't really bother you...

My son won a turtle at our county fair this summer. They aren't that hard to care for. Try this site out it should explain every thing that you need to know.

They are supposed to be very diseased. They are especially dangerous around small children. You need to wash your hands constantly.
