I think the highest number of fans attend basketball games. That makes sense because there are a lot more basketball games than either football or baseball. An interesting question! I am going to ask what the #1 participation sport is!

American Football is the biggest sport in this country. Go to a kid and ask them if they would rather play in the World Series or the Superbowl and most would say Superbowl. The NFL is just huge. Part of the reason is that it is willing to adapt. Baseball is essentially the same sport it always was, well those who say tradition is great will say that is how it should be, Americans perfer a game willing to fit what we want to see. Also that slow pace of baseball, at least in this country, makes it rather boring to watch. When baseball actually speeds up the game then people might care again. Who wants to watch a pitcher sit on the mound for about a minute without actually pitching? Another problem is the lenth of the season. They play 162 games. So until about 100 or more games into the season they are meaningless to the fans as far as playoffs. You can't tell who will make it and who won't. In the NFL there are only 16 games before the playoffs, and they are almost all weekend games. So the fans can watch all the games alot easier. Baseball has so many games they have to play most of the week.

Most professional sports reporters agree that Football is the #1 sport in the USA. Baseball may have more ticket sales due to playing 162 games as opposed to the NFL's 16 but if you measure a sports popularity in terms of the intensity that people feel it then Football is clearly #1 especially at the high school and college level. People plan entire weekends around seeing football and in rural parts of America entire towns go to football games for local schools. You might say that baseball is #1 at the professional level although it is in decline but football is number one overall.

Probably more people watch Football on TV than baseball. Other than post season games baseball is almost completely regional, that is to say very few people care about a game or will watch it other than the fans in the cities involved. This is less true in football. In the United States NASCAR seems to have taken hold in many areas.

Football has blown past baseball as the #1 sport. Check the tv ratings and look at the fans that show up for every game in all kinds of weather. Plus I'll be you see more people buy football merchandise then baseball merchandise.

no question football is the #1 sport. they have the highest tv ratings followed by NASCAR.
basball is not a popular as it used to be, you don't see kids playing baseball like you did in the past. basketball seems to be more inner city, but can be played anyplace and is played all over the world. I just got back from central Asia and they had never seen baseball.

Though i am into Baseball and Hockey, I have to admit that Football is the most popular sport in the US at the moment. Mind you, Baseball is more about skills and professionalism. Football, on the other hand is more about brute force and speed.

all of these people who say baseball is more popular than football are totally clueless. the TV ratings tell the story. football is the #1 sport in america by a HUGE margin. baseball isn't even 2nd, NASCAR is.
