Arthritis (from Greek arthro-, joint + -itis, inflammation; plural: arthritides) is a group of conditions where there is damage caused to the joints of the body. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability over the age of 65.

There are many forms of arthritis, each of which has a different cause. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases in which the body is attacking itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection. Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint and subsequent inflammation. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease and occurs following trauma to the joint, following an infection of the joint or simply as a result of aging. There is emerging evidence that abnormal anatomy may contribute to early development of osteoarthritis.

Uric acid is an organic compound of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen with the structure shown right:

xanthine oxidase oxidizes oxypurines such as xanthine and hypoxanthine to uric acid. In humans and higher primates, uric acid is the final oxidation product of purine metabolism. In most other mammals, the enzyme uricase further oxidizes uric acid to allantoin. The loss of uricase in higher primates parallels the similar loss of the ability to synthesize ascorbic acid vitamin C. This may be because in higher primates uric acid partially replaces ascorbic acid. Both urate and ascorbate are strong reducing substances (electron donors) and potent antioxidants.

Uric acid is also the end product of nitrogen metabolism in birds and reptiles. In such species, it is excreted in feces as a dry mass. While this compound is produced through a complex and energetically costly metabolic pathway (in comparison to other nitrogenated wastes such as urea or ammonia), its elimination minimizes water loss. It is therefore commonly found in the excretions of animals that live in very dry environments.

Humans produce only small quantities of uric acid with excess accumulation leading to a type of arthritis known as gout.

In human blood, uric acid concentrations between 3.6 and 8.3 mg/dL are considered normal by the American Medical Association, although significantly lower levels are common in vegetarians due to a decreased intake of purine-rich meat.

The disease gout in humans is associated with elevated blood levels of uric acid. Saturation levels of uric acid in blood may result in one form of kidney stones when the urate crystallizes in the kidney. Some patients with gout eventually get uric kidney stones. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is also associated with very high serum uric acid levels.

Uric acid may be a marker of oxidative stress, and may have a potential therapeutic role as an antioxidant (PMID 16375736). On the other hand, like other strong reducing substances such as ascorbate, uric acid can also act as a proxidant, particularly at elevated levels. Thus, as noted here, it is unclear whether elevated levels of uric acid in diseases associated with oxidative stress such as stroke and atherosclerosis are a reactive protective response or a primary cause.

The high nitrogen content of uric acid makes guano a useful agricultural fertilizer.

The crystalline form of uric acid is used as a reflector in certain species of fireflies.

Gout (also called gouty arthritis, Greek name: podagra, from pod - foot and agra - trap) is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The term “gout” comes from the Latin word “gutta” meaning “a drop” from the belief that gout was caused by drops of morbid humors and may be related to the large lumps of urate deposits.

Rheumatism or Rheumatic disorder is a non-specific term for medical problems affecting the heart, bones, joints, kidney, skin and lung. The study of, and therapeutic interventions in, such disorders is called rheumatology.

The term "rheumatism" is still used in colloquial speech and historical contexts, but is no longer frequently used in medical or technical literature; it would be fair to say that there is no longer any recognized disorder simply called "rheumatism". The traditional term covers such a range of different problems that to ascribe symptoms to "rheumatism" is not to say very much: arthritis and rheumatism between them cover at least 200 different conditions.

A vast number of traditional herbal remedies were recommended for "rheumatism". Modern medicine, both conventional and complementary, recognises that the different rheumatic disorders have different causes (and several of them have multiple causes) and require different kinds of treatment. Most sources dealing with rheumatism tend to focus on arthritis. However "non-articular rheumatism", also known as "regional pain syndrome" or "soft tissue rheumatism" can cause just as much discomfort and difficulty.

The major rheumatic disorders currently recognised include:

* Osteoarthritis
* Rheumatoid arthritis
* Rheumatic heart disease (a long-term complication of Rheumatic fever)
* Neck pain
* Back pain
* Fibromyalgia
* Ankylosing spondylitis
* Psoriatic arthritis
* Systemic lupus erythematosus
* Temporal arteritis and Polymyalgia rheumatica
* Tenosynovitis
* Capsulitis
* Bursitis/ Tendonitis, Shoulder pain, wrist, biceps, leg, knee (patellar), ankle, hip, and Achilles
* Rheumatic fever.

Although these disorders probably have little in common in terms of their epidemiology, they do share two characteristics: they cause chronic (though often intermittent) pain, and they are difficult to treat. They are also, collectively, very common. The very long list of supposed herbal remedies for rheumatism no doubt reflects the intractable nature of the problems it involves, and so, perhaps, does the fact that are no fewer than six patron saints for sufferers from rheumatism: Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, Saint Colman, Saint James the Greater, Saint Killian, Saint Servatus, and Saint Totnan.

Initial therapy of the major rheumatological diseases is with paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), members of which are ibuprofen and diclofenac. Often, stronger analgesics are required.

Gout is a condition where uric acid crystals build up in the body.
This can happen in the area of the big toe and cause a lot of pain.
Our foods contain purines; some foods are higher in this than others.
The doctor may place you on a lower purine diet (of which they will usually provide you a list of foods to avoid. There is also medications that can lower the uric acid in the blood
Here an alternative way to cure gout?

It can happen both ways. Memory usually interferes in a person who has very little control over his mind. From spiritual angle, mind is looked at as having 5 aspects. The three are memory, imagination & sleep, and the other two are right centre & wrong centre from which we operate the 3 (or the other 3 get operated upon, if we are not consciously rooted into the right or wrong centre) As an example, a fully drunk person is strongly rooted in wrong centre, and you can't argue with such a person, and a saintly person if strongly rooted in right centre, and again very difficult to contradict such a person in an arguement. We common people oscillate to often, and then invoke the memory & imagination, and so often inadvertently fall a prey to the situation, the chance being whether we were in right centre or wrong when acting out of that moment of mind. Spirituality creates a possibility to understand and consciouly control these centres, (even sleep can be invoked at will, with practice.... note, some people have difficulty in invoking it, and hence use pills). And, recalling from memory again depends on how we stored the information (like ... well arranged books in a library can be located more easily).

Your question is complicated and needs a long answer. I refer you to Murray and Pizzorno's Enclyclopedia of Natural Medicine, and/or Balch & Stengler's Prescription for Natural Cures to research these answers. Both books are by authorities in the field of natural therapy and contain long informative chapters full of good advice.

Joint pain or stiffness of the joint may be caused by overexertion, injuries, arthritis, muscle pain,bursitis and other diseases. Depending on the cause of the joint pain, joints on both sides of the body and small or large joints may be affected. Some types of joint pains can be completely cured but for other types of joint pain (like pain caused by osteoarthritis), treatment will only reduce the pain. More information on joint pain , home remedies and treatment is available at http://tinyurl.com/z5vx5
