Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

A day that is celebrated to honor all the workers. Usually you get the day off but when you work in security you still have to work and you get time and a half pay but that's about it!
This is from the Encarta Encyclopedia:
Labor Day, legal holiday honoring workers, celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September.
Hope this helps and maybe the U.K. would like to get one of it's own! What's not to like? A day off to celebrate work? I'll take four please!!!!
Have a great day!!!

Well, there are bank holidays. It's the same concept. ;-) Of course, people in the U.S. don't get many holidays, so it's only a single day.
Once upon a time though, it was about the rights of workers and recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the unions. Nowadays, it has as much connection to the well being of the people as Tony Blair and New Labour.
