Yes and yes: it's on her dress over her chest, actually. She was not physically branded like they do with steers etc, but she was 'branded' as an adulteress in the eyes of the very strict community she lived it. Why did she not just throw the dress away? She took a different tack and wore it with pride, the "A" richly embroidered to show that while she was held guilty by those around her, she was strong enough to face them down and eventually earn their respect. She did the embroidery herself, and made what was supposed to be a thing of shame into something beautiful.

It's a wonderful story but unfortunately it's very hard to read these days because our language has moved on a lot, but if you can manage it you'll find it's about a lot more than just "the letter".

It was like a patch that she had to put on the front of each dress she wore. Over the years she embroidered more and more on it and simply attached it to the different dresses that she wore. And no she was not allowed to be seen in public without it.

The A is sewn on the outside chest area of her dress. She was condemned to wear it publicly because she had a child out of wedlock, and the A stands for"Adulteress."

It is on her dress. She cannot just throw it away, just like the Jews could not throw away the Star of David they had to wear in World War 2.
