Especially americans, i'd like to know what exactly this event stands for?

Originally it was a feast where the Pilgrims and Native Americans ate. The Pilgrim's were thankful that the NA helped them get through a rough time by helping them with food and farming.
Today it is a day to remind ourselves of everything we have, how we got that way. But I think mostly it is about family. It is a chance for relatives to all sit down together to share a meal and catch up on things, share stories, and make new memories. It's a chance for us to thank a supreme being if we believe in one, or to be just in general humbled by blessings in our lives.

It is a day to gather with friends and family to express gratitude to our ancestors and those who blazed the trail for us. It is a day to give thanks for all we have compared to many of our brothers and sisters around the world. We do this by gathering together, eating until we reach comatose states, then watching football all day.
Really, it is a historical reenactment of the dinner attended by the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. The Native Americans supplied much of the food, and the Pilgrims didn't kill them. It was the first breaking of bread together in what would become the great American melting pot.

Thankfulness -- thanks that I have been able to grow up in America, free to make my own choices of what I want to be and not be trapped in something that someone or some government says I should be. Thankful that I was able to Serve my country successfully through a full career in the Military -- and that my siblings are still serving. Thankful that my Parents did the best they could for all of us -- especially since our father was a Paraplegic WWII Veteran. Thankful for a Strong Mother -- who showed me that any WOMAN must be strong enough to be able to raise her family successfully -- and CAN live on her own and make an income, and GET an Education. Thankful for the blessings of liberty and what I have surrounding me.

Traditionally for Americans it is a holiday celebration meant to give "thanks" for a good harvest & the health of family & friends...
Now... I believe it has become a celebration of over indulgence where Americans can gather with friends or family to stuff their faces, talk about achievements or newly acquired possessions, & sit on their cans watching football.

It's supposed to be a day to pause and reflect on our blessings. Mostly now it's a day to gather with friends and family and have a feast and for many, to watch the parades and football games.

Thankfulness for al of God's blessings, like living in a country that is free, thankfulness for my family and positon in life, and Turkey for me-turkey for you!!!Love turkey! Then happy anticipation as that is the start of the getting ready for Christmas time, starting to put up lights, a tad of shopping, bringing out the music and starting to decorate.

we celebrate how the indians didn't let us die because they brought us food and then taught us how to grow our own and survive in this new land. today we celebrate family friends and all other things we are thankful for.
