The continent is not poor per say but the people sure are poor. I don't know of a viable way to keep enough wealth in Africa when most of the resources are not developed in house.

Most Africans are poor but mainly because of their own making. They embrace communism and elect Dictators to lead them then wonder why nothing improves. Africa has a long history of as soon as the white colonials leave, their Country starts to go down the tubes at the loss of expertise. Racism and xenophobia is also rife in Africa which contributes to the strife.Zimbabwe and now South Africa stand as cases where once economically viable countries are or are nearly in ruin whilst the black elite enrich themselves at the expense of their citizens.

You live in Africa, yet you have the free time and the money to be on Yahoo answers??? Wow, that's pretty good!
I think a lot of people in Africa are poor -- not sure what the solution is. In some cases, it would be helpful to overthrow their country's dictators who are hoarding all the country's resources and world's aid for themselves rather than passing it on to the people. In other cases, I don't know .... some Africans live in countries/areas where there's just no good resources, they'd probably have to move.
Or, are you making the mistake here of calling all black people in America "Africans" regardless of whether they were born here in the USA, came from Africa, or came from other continents entirely?

My family is Nigerian and myself and my 3 older siblings are first generation Americans. As with most nations you have your upper, middle, and lower classes. However, most African nations have issues w/in their governmental units that tend to misuse/mismanage funding (ie-those in gov't live lavishly).
Most African countries are very rich in resources -these resources are exploited (ie-Sierra Leone-diamonds, ie-Nigeria-oil).
My oldest brother is a Surgeon ,second oldest - a Pharmacist -now V.P. at his company (since receiving his M.B.A. several years ago), third- holds a degree in Biochemistry, and myself- now finishing up my 2nd degree in Nursing (first in Criminal Justice/Psychology). Africa is a nation that views education in very high regard. The question you posed shows how most view Africa/Africans. There are many young (22- 25 year old) professionals (ie-doctors, lawyers, accountants, and engineers) living in Africa. These people can't find work (not due to laziness), can't start post-education programs (not due to lacking the drive or intellect), and can't leave the country due to government politics. Many students have to deal w/ professors striking due to not being paid (also due to the gov't mismanaging funds).
Though the nation has it's flaws I believe it's love of God,culture, life, and education enable it to still function through all the issues of corruption within the government(s).
I'm very pleased that you asked the question-don't take everything you see on the news or hear in passing/etc. at face value. I believe taking a trip to Africa or researching the history of various African countries will be very interesting/offering a serious awakening to many who don't know a lot about Mother Africa. Also, Africa is where the first colleges/universities were started.*Use that as a start to learning more about her. ENJOY! :)

By worldwide standards then the African countries are poor but within Africa itself there are different levels of poverty - compare South Africa with Burkina for example.
The problem of solving poverty in Africa is a very complicated one and one that needs to be addressed on many fronts at the same time. This will require a concerted effort from people and governments around the world and from the Africans themselves.
In a nutshell there needs to be...
• Massive investment from countries outwith Africa
• Rooting out of corruption from the lowest individual level right up to government level.
• Free trade within the African nations and a standardisation of trading laws, imports, exports and currencies (as in the European Union) and the West African ECU.
• Removal of trade and farming subsidies elsewhere in the world which locks Africa out of many trade deals.
• Huge investment in agriculture to prevent half the population being engaged in subsistence farming.
• Huge investment in commerce to prevent the other half of the population being engaged in hand-to-mouth trading.
• The removal, or at least deferment, of international debt.
• The development of natural resources and tourist areas to encourage tourists and outside investment.
• A decline in the rapidly expanding population which sees meagre resources having to be divided between more and more people.
• A greater emphasis on education as currently there are very high rates of illeteracy and a generally poor standard of education with some African countries not even having a single university.
• A change of peoples attitudes towards health issues. For example, everyone in Africa knows that mosquitos breed in dirt and stagnant water but the vast majority of people encourage this by dumping rubbish, fouling water courses etc etc.
• There are many more things but I won't bore you by listing them here other than to say that perhaps the biggest hurdle that the African nations have to overcome is the mindset of the people themselves. There are many opportunities available but no-one is grasping them.

Poor, economically speaking. The world must come together to provide them the opportunity to better their own lives. The first place to start is with debt forgiveness. Join makepovertyhistory.com, like I have and bring awareness to the issues facing Africa.

Africans ARE really poor. Even those countries with NOTHING but rich minerals are POOR!!!!!!
Too much fighting, too much ethnic hatred, too long under European control, lack of education, oppression.....I could go on and on.
One good trend I'm seeing is WOMEN coming to the political foreground. I think WOMEN will be the saviours of Africa.
