Saltwater fish come from seas or oceans, and need water with high salinity. Freshwater fish come from lakes or rivers, and do not need such high levels of salt in the water. And brakish water fish come from those areas such as where rivers meet the ocean and they survive where the water is a mixture.

Guppies are freshwater fish.

However, even fresh water has a small amount of salt in it. You can find a product called "aquarium salt" at your pet store or perhaps at a retail or grocery store, there will be directions on how much to use. This is for freshwater tanks and is not intended to be used to create a saltwater tank.

Ok this is a great question thjank you for asking it. Fresh water is in no way as complex as saltwater and the set up as far as cost goes there is a huge difference in price five to one more expensive for salt. It is not a simple task to change over and it is not just adding salt. Alot of things that would be safe in a fresh water tank would be toxic in a saltwater tank as far as fish there are only mollies all the of the mollies and some of them are beautiful, can be switched to saltwater all other fish would die during the change from fresh to salt the PH is different as well neutral in fresh water is 7.0 and in salt water it is 8.0 there is so much more and if you want all of this info I would be so happy to explain it to you. Email me at barrygeller@yahoo.com I love saltwater and I have been doing it for 25 or 30 years I love the challenge and keeping a reef is so wonderful. I look forward to chatting with you. Barry
