http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ has a free online virus scan and it also searches for spyware and adware. If that doesn't work, try http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Are you actually running a non-genuine copy of Windows? Windows Update is now installing a program called Windows Genuine advantage, which alerts you with a little pop-up bubble if you're not running Genuine Windows. You can uninstall this through Add/Remove programs. Make sure you review the updates downloaded by Windows Update before you install them, and uncheck Windows Genuine Advantage.
Of course, if you are using Genuine Windows, you've probably been infected with spyware or a virus. Spybot Search & Destory or Ad-Aware are both great (and free) spyware removal programs.

Unfortunately, my input is not a solution but it is to say that I know what youre going through as I've been trying to get rid of it for last 2 months (approx) and the bugger keeps coming back. I've even "sytem restored" to earlier time and seemed to work for couple of days, however it came back... with a vengeance! My computer is slowly deterioriating to a very pitiful performance and now doesn't allow me to restore system. I'm actually thinking of wiping the whole thing and restart from scratch! (just wish I knew what I was doing) Would be really great if anyone could help with instructions in removing this pest, once and for all, please
Just scanned through prior answers, thank you I will try suggestions... Oh. and, to those who know who they are, b4 u judge and excecute me, as was done to this person, I would like to point out that I paid good hard-earned money for my computer and its contents (second-hand) and unfortunately did not even think to ask for the CDs to the installed software (which may I add, had been added to the equation in calculating the cost of the system, as a package, of which I paid for) Have tried several times to plead my case with Microsoft, however they haven't even given me the common decency to even reply (even if its to decline) so have counted my losses and try to fix myself. So as you can see, I am special! Pretty special stupid and naive to have trusted a stranger.. Comments like that, although may be valid at times, could be construed as a personal attack and I think its important for us to stick to the facts and not get personal, lest we lose focus on what were here for.. At the end of it all you end up with a site where everyone is abusing each other all the time... and really.. at the end of the day.. who's gonna keep coming back for that!

If it is a windows notification, there is a process you can go through to get it reauthenticated. The last update (THe Windows Verification Genuine Advantage Update) is broken. All our computers at work are having the issue, and I know we paid for the software, and had actual windows CD's hologram and all...
There is still nothing in the knowledge base about it, though. I think you have to call in to get it fixed.

I Agree with Doc8 on this. Uninstall the software, and buy a new version of it.
But I firgot, you're special and shouldn't have to pay for the goods other companies produce.
