I'm a bit confused. I'm a huge football fan- although I prefer college- My dad told me there was no more Monday Night Football and that Al Michaels and John Madden were moving to Sunday Night. Then I saw an ad for Monday Night Football on ESPN. But tonight there is a college game on ESPN during the normal MNF slot. My assumption is that the 5 years of ABCs MNF were up and it has switched to ESPN but MIchaels and Madden still have contracts with ABC. I also presume real MNF starts next week on ESPN. Is that right?? And do you know who the announcers are going to be? (maybe I'll be able to watch this year - I can't stand Madden)

Basically what happened was that in the last TV contract ESPN lost Sunday Night games to NBC. So since Disney owns both ESPN and ABC they switched MNF to ESPN, starting next week as you had guessed. ABC has actually basically given their sports dept over to ESPN. Double-header Monday with Washingot playing someone and then San Diego vs Oakland. Although I don't think MNF will really be the same with it switching over to cable, it is no longer the institue that allowed anyone to watch as long as they had a TV.

THe NFL Season starts thursday. Monday Night Football will now be on ESPN, though I don't remember who the crew is. ABC let Madden and Michaels out of their contracts, and they are going over to work Sunday Night Football on NBC. Next Monday will be the First regular NFL monday night game of the year.

ABC and ESPN are both owned by one of the most ruthless corporations in America: Disney. Don't let the floppy ears and cartoons fool you, they are downright nasty when it comes to making money.
Here is their plan: By moving a staple of American tv to a venue where you have to subscribe to watch, they are going to have an impact on cable subscribers, meaning, more people are going to sign up for cable now. In a few years, after the dust has settled, when a cable company that carries ESPN has to renew their contract with them, ESPN is going to ask for substantially more money for that cable carrier to carry ESPN. Because the satelite carriers are there, the cable company can't dare say no, so they will sign up at the higher rate, and pass that new rate on to their subscribers, and hope and pray that the subscribers don't switch to a satalite service.
Come to think about, Disney probably has a stake in either the satelite companies, or one of the companies that manufactures the equipment!
++++Sorry I made you feel like an idiot, as it wasn't my intention. I have learned when asking a question to immediately go to the money trail, and this is where the money trail has lead me. Disney pays their CEO something like $300 mil/year, and it's because of longrange planning like this. There is NO other reason that would have done this if it wasn't to generate more revenues, and I already knew that ESPN charged more than any other cable channel to be on a cable network. ++++++ OH, and some of what I said was tounge-in-cheek, but seriously Disney is a VERY effiecient profit generating enterprise.

ABC and ESPN have an affiliation between the two.
MNF is still 'on' on Monday nights... just on ESPN.
After so many years on ABC, it's taking me a little while to get used to it.

Sunday night soccer, it has the flex time table for the later component to the season, so the journey-united statesare often extraordinarily thrilling. Plus Al Michaels and John Madden fairly communicate approximately what's happening down on the sector, in comparison to a pair different commentators. *cough*Kornheiser*cough* Cheers!
