What can I put on my carved pumpkins so it will deter squirrels from eating them? With all that hard work gone into carving them, these squirrels ruin the whole thing. I cant stand those critters!!

First, this is a guess. Mammals can taste the heat from hot peppers and since birds can't, we sprinkle cayenne pepper on our suet cakes to deter the squirrels. I have read that some people give their pumpkins a light coating of Vaseline after they are carved to help to preserve them until after Halloween. How about a light coating of Vaseline...and then a sprinkling of cayenne pepper? Hope that it works if you give it a try.

At my house we had the same problem. So we went out and bought a fake Jack O' Lantern an we keep that outside. We carve pumpkins too but keep them inside in our window. Then on Halloween we put our real pumpkin out and put the fake one in our window. That way the squirrels can't eat any pumpkin!

I was thinking maybe some sort of bug repellent would keep them away, but I did a websearch and found this:

Maybe that will work??
I never put my pumpkins outside, so I've never had that problem.
Maybe you can also makesure they are cleaned out REALLY REALLY good.
