It is not the dent that makes the difference but whether or not the seal on the can is broken. Many dented cans are quite safe, but if you see any leakage or if the can is also bulging, don't eat it. Also don't eat it if the food smells at all different. There can be a great danger of food poisoning.

I hope this helps.

When a can is dented there is the possibility that the seal has been broken and bacteria have entered the container. You can get botulism from contaminated food in cans. Its' best not to use dented cans.

Ok I just wanted to know why this was in the mythology and folklore section....

But to answer your question, people say not to because of Botulism. Sometimes, very small openings can be created from a can being dropped and dented, allowing air and moisture to enter the can, and become a place where bacteria can thrive.

The food could have spoiled or there is the possibility of botulism a fatal food borne illness. I worked in fast food for many years and any dented cans were sent back. Also make sure they are not bulging or expired.

Steel cans are made with a layer of tin on the inside which does not react with the contents. If the can is dented, the layer of tin may be split and the contents would then come into contact with the steel, which would begin to corrode and contaminate the contents.
This does not apply to aluminium cans.

There's a thin layer of something that's placed inside cans. If the can is dented, there could be a chance of spoilage plus the layer of chemical could have gotten mixed up with the drink or food. Even if its cheap, you should never take chances with food or drinks that come from a dented container.

Because there's the chance the can was damaged in a way that would allow air and bacteria to get inside to cause contamination and possibly poison you when you eat the contents.

The name of the disease contracted in this way (as well as a few other ways) is botulism. It can easily be fatal if not treated quickly, and I believe it's the one that even if treated, you're probably not going to be out of bed for a few months.

If it is dented, air could have gotten in and spoiled the contents.
