i think it's because the toy companies want to make the hippos look more colorful... they probably think that kids won't really like them if they make it brown or gray... i mean, who would like it? brown and gray are kind of depressing. colorful toys catch kids' eyes more easily.

Because blue and purple are cool colors. I mean, can you imagine what it would be like if the sky was always BROWN!!!??? I mean, the suicide ratio in the world would be higher by about 40%, people wouldn't want to open their eyes in a desperate attempt at maintaining sanity, and can you imagine a world where everyone drives with their eyes closed? That wouldn't be pretty at all, let me tell you that. And besides, if you don't like the color of the hippo, you can give'em about five minuts in the microwave oven! He will turn a really bright orange and yello! But one thing's for sure, he won't be identifiable, and he definatly won't be blue or purple.
