My girlfriend is showing all the signs I can read about on the internet that would indicate she is pregnant, sore slightly swollen breasts, tender abdomen, emotional, VERY!, gets a little dizzy, feels a little sick and has some spotting apparently..she says like when she is pre menstrual - but we did a test and it was negative. Should we do another one or are there other things that you get these symptoms with?

Ok thanks so far. Let me clarify some stuff. She is on the pill, so chances are not pregnant I guess, but everything points to her being pregnant. I am a little vague as I am a bloke and therefore not pregnant. For the people that are suggesting a pregnancy test, read the section where I wrote 'we did a test'.. but I read that they are sometimes not accurate if too early cos of the lack of 'pregnant hormone' in your urine. Anyway Period is due next week, last pill Friday, so couple days after that but then if you are on the pill you'll get a period anyway right.. so that isn't going to be accurate in showing not pregnant either. I guess its a trip to the doctor then - being the only real way to tell. Thanks for the sensible answers by the way. I will try getting her to relax a little, and then we will do another one in the morning or something. Laters

Mm still some confusion - I am terrible at being clear.
Right, so she is on the pill, and has been for 6 months or so. Not a new pill either, took a break and gone back on it. No issues.
Period is next week, not late yet. Just was advised to take a test to check, as the symptoms she is getting now seem to be those you get when pregnant. I don't know, I am not a doctor :-)
So the general concensus is wait till she is late.. fair enough.. but then when she takes her last pill this weekend she is going to more than likely get a 'false period'anyway isn't she? got told that by .. er.. her I think.

For the record, we're both grownups, so the support and money and worry things are not an issue. If she is then she is, just be bad timing as we aren't planning a babe just yet.. not that we wouldn't love it and embrace the challenge. Can't get to the doctor till Weds, good ole NHS, so that leaves a worried lady wondering why she is getting all these symptoms a week before period time.

Being a woman myself and having had two children i would say in my experience that this could be a possible pregnancy..very early one..on the other hand when a woman is pre-menstral they tend to suffer from the same sypmtoms..i myself suffer vomitting, dizzyness, moody, tender breast etc..if the pregnancy test failed now..do another one,but i imagine your girlfriend is pre-mensral..or it may be a phantom pregancy which will happenn if she wants to get pregnant..our minds to odd things, like when we feel stressed out we suffer backache etc,it is best to resolve this matter sooner or later..eaither way it will be a good outcome..you seems to be a solid type of man who would support his girlfriend, just by your grown up attitude to all this.

take care both of you.

UPDATE:

here's the deal, just 'cause she continues to take her pill and she reaches the pills where her period should start doesn't mean her period will start. If she is pregnant, there are hormones in place to negate the period. She may spot or something like that, but if she is pregnant, trust me, the HCG will be detected in her urine and you will get a positive even if she is spotting or flowing a bit.

As you said, the best thing to do is wait until she is suppose to start and THEN take the test. Seriously, it sounds like she is just having a rough month. She is most likely not pregnant.
***************************************

How close to starting her actual period is she? There are over the counter tests you can take up to 5 days prior to the date that your period is due. Other tests are 3 and 2 days.

You can take the test in the morning and make sure she doesn't drink any water through the night. This would keep the HCG, pregnancy hormone (If there is any) strong enough for any test to detect.

If you took the test too soon, then yes, take another test in a few days to make sure.

To be honest though, once a woman starts freaking out that she might be pregnant, that stress alone (Or excitement) can slow down the process of her normal period (Which includes the very same symptoms you described above).

Try to get her to relax and know this: If she is pregnant, then she is pregnant, if she isn't then she isn't. These things have a tendency to just take care of themselves that way.

Best to you both.

When did she take the test? If you took it more than 5 days before the period is due, chances are it's gonna show negative since the hormone level is not high enough for it to detect. Wait a week and take the test again. If she expirenced spotting about 1 week before her period, there's a good chance that she is pregnant. So wait till about 3-4 days before her period and buy a good and reliable test I(maybe a little expensive). I bought a 99cent test and it shows negative, then in the same day I bought an expensive one and it shows me positive right away.

If she's on the pill, it's not very likely that she's pregnant, unless she doesn't take it right (like skip days and stuff).

the pregnancy tests are VERY reliable. If you do one (properly, but this is pretty easy) and it is negative, she is NOT pregnant. To be sure and since they are so cheap, you can do another one.

In terms of timing, the hormone test (the one easily available everywhere, which works with urine) works from the implantation of the egg on. The implantation occurs from 6 to 12 days after fertilisation. And for a regular 28-day cycle, with ovulation on the 14th day, fertilisation can at the earliest occur on that 14th day, and at the latest on the 16th. Meaning that the implantation occurs between, say, the 20th and the 28th day, i.e. close to the next period.

So normally, you'd wait to see if the next period comes, and if it does not after some delay (on women with a very regular cycle even one day late is very late, on others with more irregular cycles delays of 2-3 days can be normal), then you do a test.

You say you had a negative test. If it was not done too early then your girlfriend is not pregnant.

Hope this helps

The best way to find out is for a blood test at her docters office it only takes a few minutes and it is very accurate results! If your girlfriend was just put on birthcontroll then maybe she is haveing side effects from the pill! The best way to tell other then a blood test is if her period is gone then that would almost most certain tell you that she is pregnant

i hope this helps you hun, take care and take care of your girlfriend too

It sounds to me that you would like her to be pregnant. If you got a negative pregnancy test then it is indead an indication that she is not pregnant. If she took the test too early it won't detect any pregancy hormones.

I would suggest that you guys buy another pregnancy test. Don't just assume that she is not pregnant. With these things you can never be too sure.

If your girlfriend is pregnant then Congrats!
I hope you want the baby coz if you don't then it will explain ur curiosity.

Please stick by her side if she is.

Good Luck!!!

I would wait a week then do another test. Saying that I had those symptoms loads of times and thought I was pregnant but I wasn't. When I did fall pregnant I knew straight away and was over whelmingly exhausted with all the other symptoms. Just take it easy and re- test. Good luck to you both xx

if her hcg level isn't high enough the home test will not come out positive. You might want to wait a little longer and then try to take another test or go to the doctors and have blood done that is the MOST accurate way of knowing. Yet, sometimes our minds can play tricks on our body's and throw those signs in there. Hang in there time will only tell. BEST WISHES!

The symptoms could point to pregnancy but your information is very vague so it's hard to say. If her period is due then the symptoms could be from that. If she is late, wait another week and do another test. It could be anything really, she should see the Dr if her period is late.

It could be many things.......Either way - if she is late or showing signs of pregnancy - best to find out as early as possible so you can make better choices. She may be emotional from PMS or emotional from worry. Give it a few more days and check it out with a doctor......if you cant afford a Doctor, then call around for a clinic that offers help to young couples. Best of luck and for the time being, make sure she at least eats right. (I would trend to worry about tubular pregnancy if she continues to experience more abdominal pain). Especially if you re-check with a home pregnancy test. Best to check it out with a professional.
But most of all try to keep her calm and be a strong support system for her, especially if it is something she is worried about.
