It's because of inferiority complex in them. They try to prove themselves better than the rest (because they are suffering from inferiority complex no doubt they won't admit it). A normal person generally don't try something extraordinary.

Often, a thought that can be expressed easily in one language finds great difficulty in some other language. For example, "She is not unpretty" is almost impossible in most languages except English and Greek. Try that in Indonesian, for example.

If you thing that a multi-lingual person feels "smug," you are probably an American, i.e., you haven't got a clue because you have never been more than 1,000 miles away from home. (This is not a criticism - just a fact.) More likely, the speaker feels blessed for having found just the exact shade of meaning intended.

When one speaks in one's mother tongue the speaker knows exactltly what the speaker wanted to say. When speaking a second, third or other number of a language one isn't as sure as when speaking the mother tongue. What is your mother tongue? Your English isn't bad, but your spelling isn't all that great.
