i think so - i think animals are more smart than science gives them credit for, and i think that animals live in a very different world than we do. but it can't really been scientifically proven, because it is very difficult to assess thought in a scientific study - all we can assess is their actions.

that's a very good question. really tough to answer for the same reason mighty power gave-- you simply can't measure it or such, making studies for abstract thought impossible. i personally think though, that apes and other primates are not capable of much abstract thought. while many of them have quite good situation solving skills, i doubt that when a chimpanzee is given a a brush and canvas, much creative thinking is going on inside. in fact i think that maybe, just maybe, creative/abstract thought is one of the things that makes us human
