They both use different operating systems, PC uses Microsoft Windows (XP), and Macs use Apple Mac OSX.
Nowadays since Apple decided to use Intel chips, the hardware / architecture is the same. Now you can even put windows on a Mac but not the other way around.
Macs are known to be more secure - out of the box, they don't get the same amount of security threats as windows does.
On a windows machine you have to have a firewall, spyware scanner anti-virus scanner, all set up and system up-to-date before you'd even dare to connect to the internet!

Apple Co. sells ridiculously expense slower computers with closed operating systems Macintosh OS X.
Apple computers are designed by one company running apple system software.
PC's are running Microsoft Windows system software, or others such as Linux and the computer parts are open design standard built by thousands of companies competitively to compete by offering performance enhancements. PC's may be repaired at home with little knowledge and expense. Apple computers are impossible to repair at home and in-shop service labor rates are extreme, equivalent to a dealership auto service. Apples are very difficult to repair simple breakdowns as compared with PC's.
If a power supply on a PC fails it can be replace in 10 minutes at home at a cost for materials range from $25 to $50. This service can cost from $25 to $75.
An Apple computer with a power supply failure takes 4 to 8 hours to disassemble the computer and replace the part which is about $150 and can only be done by an highly trained technician. This service can cost from $600 to $1000.
So, go out and purchase an Apple, when it breaks down, you'll have a pile of plastic and metal for the scrap heap.
For the price to fix an Apple computer you can purchase nearly top of the line PC computer.

Apple is a company that makes, among other things, a computer called the Macintosh (or "Mac"). It runs on an operating system known as DOS.
A PC can be made by any number of companies (Hewlett Packard, Compaq, etc.) and runs on Microsoft's Windows operating system.
The difference between DOS and Windows is how they appear on the screen, and what programs you can run on them. Windows is the better system because it's easier to use and there are more program choices. Alot of people don't like Windows, though, not because of how it is as a system but because their business practices often eliminates smaller programming companies.

The main difference is the operating system. All applications use it as a hosting environment. Operating system can be optimized to perform a lot of different things, hence, you have an XP Professional for business applications and XPHome for multi-media applications. Apple/Mac camp is known for it's excellent support for running multi-media applications, although PC applications are also gaining ground in this arena.

Major differences:
Different operating systems
Mac's feature Mac OS systems while PCs feature Windows
Semantics - Keyboard commands and on screen names of applications often differ between Mac and PC.
Many files saved in one format cannot be used in the other without taking certain steps. Example: An MS Word document can't be saved as a .doc file and used on a Mac. it would have to be saved as an .rtf instead.
Use differences:
PCs are much more common and thus more universal while Macs are stronger in the area of usage for high end graphics.

A HUGE differenct... a PC is a Computer... an apple is something else.
It's like the difference between a horse and a mule. They both have 4 legs, ears and a tail... but one is usable for many purposes and the other is only fit to eat when it dies.

A lot of difference. PC's are mostly in the business world. Most companies have them. Apple is mostly in schools. The reason is softwear. There are more programmers that program PC then Apple.
