I have been extremley poor in my life, homeless and hungry. My family has been so poor that my sister had to sleep in a dresser drawer and are heat was from an old stove in the kitchen. My parents never onced had their hands out for help but worked 2 or 3 jobs each to feed us and house us. We did not have free cable AS THEY DO TODAY IF THEY WANT IT

Hello
You are basing your long question on a number of erroneous assumptions.
Less than 1% of the national budget goes to welfare programs - food stamps, Medicaid, school lunches.
Your level of taxation has nothing directly to do with the national budget. Congress adopts a budget that it needs.
It adopts rates of taxation that it thinks the American people will stand for. That's why, with a huge deficit, the current administration has continually proposed tax cuts.
Lowering taxes supposedly has the affect of stimulating the economy, but Clinton proved that this is not necessary. Raising taxes supposedly has the affect of slowing the economy down - and keeping inflation under control, but this also is of limited effectiveness.
Be mindful that it is easy to "beat up" the poor and the elderly - they are powerless. You would be more effective if you wrote a letter to your US Rep and complained about the overall tax rate - and asked what His [or Her] "earmarked" projects were in the most recent two annual budgets.

Just hope you never find yourself in a position to need assistance; your attitude will change pretty fast then. I don't believe the majority of people on welfare are getting a free ride, especially those with kids; it's a struggle (free cable, etc., yeah right). There are always those bad apples that take advantage of any system and ruin it for the rest and you find "them" everywhere in life.
In today's world, they say most people are just two pay checks away from that happening to them and I believe it.
I think there are too many other areas, ones far less worthy, where our tax dollars are being wasted that need to be addressed. So show a little compassion for your fellow man. There's a saying, "Be careful of the toes you step on today, they may be attached to the a*s*s you kiss tomorrow." I think that also apples to certain situations and circumstances; you just never know. Don't knock something that you, yourself, may need someday.

When you figure it out, please email me. I'd like to know why I am paying $50 co pay for a special medication I need (through my insurance, which I also pay for), and the Bosnian woman checking out next to me, had 12-15 prescriptions and paid less than $12. She didn't speak a word of English but she sure knew how to get on Medicaid.
I'm actually not someone who worries about immigrants coming to the US, although I am appalled at the number who don't bother to learn English, or states who have changed their language to accommodate other language. My Bosnian neighbors (although I'm not sure why there are here, as their countries fighting is over), are very nice people. They keep up their houses, yards and families for the most part, just like my black, white and asian neighbors.
What I object to is the house that they bought, was bought for them. I worked my butt off for almost 20 years before I could buy a house. My medicine costs an arm and a leg in co-pays because that's what is on the insurance policy that I have to work for.
If they are here for more than 6 months, then they need to support themselves like anyone else. I don't see that happening, I see us providing everything, so why would they need to exert the effort to not be dependent on the government?
Sorry, just ranting here.

Have you ever seen taxes decrease as the result of a program ending? And you likely never will. I'm sure you have noticed that "a small increase" is always in multiple dollars, while a "significant savings" is in cents.
When it comes to welfare, two problems.
1) Very little of your tax money goes to welfare
2) Can you imagine the bleeding hearts if it was even suggested? "Putting grandmothers on the street and allowing babies to starve" would just be the start.

What are the welfare laws and how much of our tax dollars go there?
Do you think there should absolutely be no government assistance? Every man for himself. Too bad if your company closed down, you should have gone to collage to be a more valuable person?
Maybe require welfare persons to do job training (MANDATORY) and birthcontrol (MANDATORY) and parenting classes (MANDATORY).
What all do you get on welfare anyway. I live in the Bahamas (but am American) and my wages here suck. Maybe I should move back and suck the system. Can I make more that $400 a week?

Do you honestly think that if all welfare were eliminated, your taxes would decrease? Not a chance! Very little of our taxes go to those kind of things. Right now, almost all the money the country spends goes to feed the "war on terror", or Saudi Arabia, which ever you choose! It's going to get worse, before it gets any better!

why did you put education in there? It's everyone's responsibility to educate the younger generations that will someday lead this country. As for the rest of it, it's a way to control poverty, those of us who work have an obligation to help out those born into a lower social class. We can't end the circumstances that cause economical problems for individuals, so we do what we can to help these people gain the basics, food, clothing, and shelter. Did you know that if you paid your utility bills and put food on the table last month you are among the richest 10% of people in the world.

Your pretty stingy what the government dose with the money you pay in taxes is what they need it for if you don't like the way it's done then run for a office that will allow you to change it so until then you just have to deal with it or move out of the country.

The thing is you and I pay less than 1% for all of this as far as our contribution goes to the entire welfare system.
Taking your income and what you really pay into this system, you wouldnt even notice the difference in your check. Its so small that you and I as individuals dont really notice it unless you are discecting the income by pennies. Which in reality is what you pay, pennies.
As far as the welfare system goes in itself, yes its a joke in many ways. Im not one to say go ahead and let a bunch of people have kids on my dime. Im all for it getting people on their feet and using it as a crutch in difficult times. But not for the long run.

Welfare has been reformed a lot over the last ten years. Less than 1% of federal tax money goes to welfare.
