A sting ray has a stinger in its tail much like a scorpion. It can be posion. In Steve's case he was stung hard and deep. He was stung in the chest. The stinger penitrated his heart. Most folks don't live long or well with a wound that damages the heart. Death my not have been instant but it was too quick for a good rescue. If he had been stung like that while already in a hospital, his odds of survival would still be very very limited.

Stingrays have very poisonous barbs but aren't usually fatal. But a sting to a vital part of the body would definitely be fatal.
His death is a tragedy. At least he died doing what he loved! RIP Steve.

Stingrays are very poisonous. He was stung in the chest and it got him in the heart. Did not have a chance.
They know so little about stingray poisons. Sounds like if he had been sting right there in the emergency room in front of a full trauma team he would have died.

According to news reports, the stingray's barb pierced his chest and punctured his heart. They say it was a freak accident, and usually stingray encounters are not fatal. It was the severity and placement of the wound that made it so bad.

If the puncture was'nt enough, the toxin to the heart was. It irritates me when people say "well, at least it was fast. Death is death, and it's a reminder to love and care, all we can, while we can.
