From February to April I work for a CPA doing tax preparation. To prepare I took H&R Block's basic tax course, which is 66 hours of instruction over an 11 week period. ( I also take refresher seminars.) I set my own hours around my kids' schedules. Starting pay was 16.00 hr with no fringe benefits other than a great working environment and a very flexible schedule.
The course is NOT fluff. It's intense with lots of homework. There is a fee and scholarships are available.
If you are interested in doing something like this, the classes start soon. Block offers postitions to its graduates, although I found the pay to be much better working in smaller firms.

Seek out a professional job at a law firm, marketing firm or if available, maybe a town government job that would give you days off the correspond to your child being out of school. I have seen folks make money under the table at these jobs and make upwards of $20+/hour.
If you are good on the phone, you might be able to do telemarketing at an insurance company or sales, but that might not be a steady stream of income you desire.
I don't know your exact personality, but maybe start some type of business. However, I would suggest getting out of the house for whatever you do. Meet people and getting out of the home is important in my humble opinion.
Whatever you do, make sure to save for retirement and college if you can...

Work from home, selling things on Ebay, Starbucks shift are typically 5 hours a day and they pay more than minimum wage plus tips. What skills do you have? Can you prepare taxes or do book keeping? School crossing guards don't work many hours but get paid decently for the hours they do work.

What are your skills??? can you cook delicious meals??? you could start cooking for your neigbours, can you speak another language?? you could translate at home, do you know physics, chemistry, math?? you could tutor, are you artistic oriented??? you could design at home. If you have no particular skills, you could get a job doing marketing or web-related jobs.
