After all international diplomacy is littered with former terrorists being accepted as the rulers of countries and the US and UK have talked to previous terrorists in the past - eg IRA, ANC, Mau Mau, Stern Gang .... I could go on.

You are misinformed. Al-Qaeda has very clear aims:
1) US and infidel troops out of the Middle east
2) No western support for Israel
3) No western support for the corrupt govts in the Middle East
4) A caliphate in the Middle East

They essentially want to separate the muslim world from the rest of the world.

Woooo finally someone who doesn't think the worlds problems will be solved by war. While Al-Qaeda fights in the name of their god, the USA and UK fight in the name of justice and peace. Which is worse fighting for something that might not even be there or for something which to achieve you need to do the exact opposite? We want peace and to get we are fighting a war....how does that make sense?

Al Qaeda is an insurgency.....they exist because Westerners are on their lands - in certain, Saudi Arabia. the u . s . a . backs the Saudi monarchy - that is the Bush -Saudi ties that led to 9/11 (examine the 'homestead of Bush, homestead of Saud'). it really is why all yet one hijacker on 9/11 replaced into Saudi. what's to barter? Why would not the u . s . a . basically go away the middle east and promise no longer to poke their noses there or everywhere else. Al Qaeda ought to really whinge about the Saudi royal relatives then, and the u . s . a . does no longer be a participant. FWIW.....in the 1990's Bin weighted down suggested his objective with terrorist attacks adversarial to the u . s . a . replaced into to set off them to invade (partly clarification for ego), and bankrupt the country scuffling with the Muhjadeen. Amazingly....Bush fell actual into the capture.

The reason those terrorists became the leaders of those countries is because they used TERROR to frighten everyone. Everybody feared for their lives and couldn't stop the terrorists from becoming the leaders.
Terrorists are no more interested in talking than going to the moon. The last tmie anybody tried to talk to Bin Laden he told them that he would keep killing Americans and that he would continue to do so until the United States became a Muslim state.
We are dealilng with unreasonable people.

Yes they want to separate the Muslim world from the rest of the world. They want the whole world to be Muslim and their way of accomplishing this is to kill everyone who is not Muslim. Talk to them they would promise not to attack and as soon as our back was turned they would come at us hard. They are not trustworthy, do you not understand this simple fact. Why don't you just go get converted and start praying 5 times a day. Don't forget to cover up your women and go shopping with them, remember they can't drive. They are just to be there for sex and giving birth to children. That is all. Rethink you opinion and include these facts in you brainstorming.

Heres the problem: unlike those other terrorists you mentioned...Al Qaida's goals are not simple independence, or petty religious issues or whatever other small-time goals those other terrorists were after. Al-Qaida is out to make an evil Islamic empire...they want all lands with Muslims in them to fall under their shadow...can you talk with people with such obviously crazy goals??? Its not one mere country or province at stake...its pretty much all of the civilized world...

Essentially they want the entire world to be a muslim world, not seperated.........

Have you not heard them say that the Isrealis and Americans should not exsist?

I suppose that the US and England could say oh we are so sorry we made you kill all those innocent people on September 11th 2001.

It appears to me the only thing that the peace loving Al-Qaeda understands is killing...............

unfortunately the aims of al qaeda would be completely unacceptable to the west. So with neither side willing to budge I cant see that negotiations would work. The only viable option is for the US an UK to address root causes that encourage people to follow Al qaeda. Obviously the destruction of Israel is unacceptable, but a palestinian state with more protection might alleviate the injustices felt. Just one example here but you get my drift.

How do you rationalize with a group or groups of people who hate you because you have more money than them? How do you rationalize with a group of people who hate you because your women are strong and independent instead of slaves. How do you rationalize with someone who tries to kill you even when you may be there to offer humanitarian aid during natural disasters? How do you rationalize with someone who truly thinks that everyone except their kind should be wiped from the earth, or converted? Sound familiar? People call us Americans bad. People don't understand what would happen if you let such hatred grow. Can you say Hitler? Ask an African American who grew up in the south with the presence of the KKK. They can tell you what it's like to live with people like I've described.

No...the "terrorists" that you have listed all wanted something other than the destruction of western civilization. What would you suggest...allowing Al-Qaeda to destroy limited areas, in exchange for their promise to "play nice"?

Perhaps they should stop trying to kill us.

Oh sorry, we're "infidels" and deserve to die aren't we?

They can go to hell. They won't be happy with anything less than the whole world becoming a Muslim state.
