I love www.rottentomatoes.com - it has an excellent collection of reviews for any film you could care to imagine, and each review is categorised as 'fresh' or 'rotten'. Therefore, any film with vastly more 'rotten' reviews than 'fresh' is likely to be, as you say, tripe!

Film criticism is subjective. In other words, one man's "tripe" is another man's "instant classic." You need to read a wide array of film criticism, and, over time, you'll find that there are certain critics whose sensibilities mirror your own. You'll know you can trust them to point you in a useful direction.

it's tricky, a lot of the big brands have studio deals which make it hard to be objective. Big sites like http://uk.movies.yahoo.com give the info on most of the big films and some newspaper sites have pretty good reviews eg http://film.guardian.co.uk/ have good reviews for smaller more art-house films as well.
Off the wall reviews on aint it cool are pretty sweet as well....

imdb.com is the best I've found. There's a review section and a message board so you can see the good and bad aspects of each film.

Total Film is pretty fair though obviously, taste varies from person to person. They are guaranteed spoiler free too.
