First are we talking about salt water or brackish water puffers? There is a huge difference between the two and the answer would be different but similar. Most times Puffers will lay eggs and the sad part of this is it will become a source of food in most cases. Unless you depend on isolating this female that is or may be caring for eggs. This will not be an easy task in fact it is daunting. Breeding in captivity is a very difficult task for most aquarists, and at a novice level almost sadly never achieved. Brackish water breeding is a lot easier and I have to say a lot less expensive. If she is pregnant she will pick a spot somewhat isolated and ward off all fish from this area. Gestation of these eggs will be about 54 day and slowly you will see eyes first. Sadly what is not eaten during this time will soon be devoured after hatching. These are sad truths. Thought they sound grim I wish you luck.

I would not take the puffer fish's word that it is pregnant. Insist on a doctors visit and a paternatity test as soon as the fry are born. Support laws are very specific as to the percentage of your income that will go to the puffer fish based on the number of offspring. I have two and it is 25%, they can have hundereds... kiss your paycheck goodbye.
