I have a 1997 Buick Riviera. Sometimes when I attempt to start the car, the security feature will not allow it to start. I have to sit and wait for the yellow "security" light to go off (about 3 minutes) in order to try it again.

I can't seem to figure out why this is occurring, and if there is anything to do to prevent it (other than replacing it). I have ordered a brand new key, eliminating a mechanics theory that it might be a dirty ignition key that causes the security feature to go off.

Any ideas?

Even after purchasing a new key, the security system still activates.

I had a 96 Pontiac with the same problem. There was a procedure in the manual that worked. I can't recall what it was, but definitely I found the solution in the manual.. You might want to double check your owner's manual, and/or and look on line for the Grand Prix manual. It's possible your mechanic is taking you for a ride on the this expensive key. Why can't your current key be cleaned with a little alcohol?

And if you knew the vas/pass key relay is just about next to the windshield in front of the steering wheel and you can't even see it very well I would try the key first too! That thing on the key is just a resistor and about 10 different resistors activate 10 different relay part numbers. Relay next, then ingnition switch, And after that new key cyl. Dirty contacts inside the key cyl? Good luck

The key uses a resister in it. Different keys have different values. Perhaps the resister has been damaged while carrying it around in your pocket. Also if it's not mating up with the ignition circuitry properly. That could be the cause of the problem. Master tech 40 yrs.
