My home is over 100 years old. I have a few old runs of non-grounded wire that I would like to have replaced with grounded wire (I'm going to put a computer at this location). Can an electrician just pull the old wire out and snake the new wire without securing inside the wall? I would like to avoid having to have holes in the walls? If it going to require holes and wall repair, I may just rearrange the room another way.

Thank you

NO fished wires do not need to be secured in the walls , just in the box. unless you are going to replace all or most of the wire, just leave the old wire in and run new wire to a new box.

This is done all the time, there is no way to secure the wire inside the wall once the walls are closed in. You should make sure that the work box is secure so you don't pull the whole thing out with a plug. Good luck.

"Old Work Boxes" have clamps in the box.
Usually I cut out where I want the box then either wire up from the basement or down from the attic the hardest part is getting the wire to the breaker box.

I hope you have a updated breaker box.
Also I find it nice that most appliances now are only two prong, they don't even use the bare (redundant) ground wire.

If you can snake new wires with the old one's, I'd do it. It's better than what you have now., But the old wires will have to be loose for you to do that. You could also consider using wirw mold for your computer location.

Wires do not have to be secured inside walls. For your own peace of mind, use a UPS to hook your computer to. It will protect it against surges or any other kind of electrical interference & will also "clean" your power.

If you can, run the wire yourself, then have the electrician hook them up. Once they are in the wall, no one will check, and it's not a safety issue.

just tell the electrician you want to use the old holes if possible if not they have ways to re route the wiring so it will not be exposed.

Talk to the electrician , as they all have their own way of routing wire.

Just have the wires fished through.

Yes it can be done...there are special tools that pull out the old wires and insert the new ones...
