The answer of Kama Quest is short and good.
You must learn a Little about slavery in old times and presently.
And in a way or another, now or centuries ago most of Christians, Muslims, etc were forced to accept their faith.
The rel question today is "are these people really religious, do they real believe, do they behave as their God commands?

First you must realise that Africans are a religious oriented people; with or with out the white man they believe in a high and supreme being which you might call God.
And again you should remember that the religion the Africans you say took from the slave masters was never the slave masters; we should remember the geographic region the religion came from. If you dive into history the religion itself originated within North African; the Horn of Africa and the so-called Middle East or should I say Asia Minor (Palestine), which is just a stone, throw from Ethiopia.
The Black man only took what was right fully his; remember the Caucasians where evangelised by those who left the regions mentioned. And the people that took the word out were not Europeans.
As for the Arabs the came into Africa with a faith with a slogan that says convert to our religion or die. And the rich heritage of faith in all of North Africa and Asia Minor was wiped out 90% by this act of religious domination.
The Africans are not fools; they were trusting and welcoming and this was one of the things that has led to what you see today.
What is yours will always come back to you.
Look at America today; the Red Indians where killed; A new set of Red Indians are coming back to their mother land, the Latin Americans the descendants of the Originals that was almost wiped out.
Water always finds its level.

The Old Testament is full of tales of the Jews getting sold into slavery, but coming out OK in the long run. It gives Black Americans hope.

Do you mean Islam or Christianity? Arab traders sold African slaves and even African tribes sold each other into slavery. I think you'll find that the whites were the buyers rather than the sellers.............

When very powerful people show up with powerful technology and tell you how things are, and then they beat or kill those that don't agree with them, it's not long before you'll believe whatever you have to to keep you alive and safe. Not only that, but imagine that part of the belief you're being taught is that not only will God punish you for rebelling, but the punishment doesn't end when your life is over. After that it's down to a fiery pit where you'll be boiled alive for eternity.
How else can you keep people enslaved generation after generation?

You have to decide how you view slavery. One assumes that you think it is evil. Therefore, the slavers were evil. If they were evil, surely their religion cannot be a true religion, because religion and evil are on opposite sides. Therefore it is an excellent question.
The answer is, almost certainly, that religion is total bunkum and the easy option for simple people. It is far easier to believe in god than in the true enormity of the cosmos. God is easier to explain than infinity, or the concept of absolutely nothing.
The slaves were simple souls who went to countries where, effectively, there was only one religion. They wanted something to believe in and it was there for them. I really don't think it is more complicated than that.
The real question is why does ANYONE follow Christianity/Islam/Hinduism etc etc?

Excellent question. Why indeed? But which faith should they have taken that of the people who sold them (Muslims) or that of the people who bought them (Christians). Ideally they should reject both and take up Hinduism or Judaism or Buddhism!

They want to be equals now and this helps a reciprocal trust and fellowship. Also, people have to move on - and no longer live in the past
