you really can't prevent it. they like to dig. you could put the dish in a bigger dish or on something else to catch what they dig out.

i dont think it is possible to prevent it... ferrets are predatory animals by nature and (if i'm not wrong) like dragging their food around... if it really does trouble you, i might suggest restricting the area in which your ferrets are allowed to romp during mealtimes. it may help them develop the habit of staying in one place while eating and thus keep the food in one area. but your fuzzies may not like it...

I have had 3 ferrets.There is no way, All ferrets do that..They are looking for the "good stuff"

what i used to do was put the dish at the bottom and then put cardborad up so it won't get on the floor. now if your asking becasue you want them to stop wasteing it on your not goign to stop that! there so picky, and want only good things.
