I am 19 years old living in Montreal, Quebec in Canada, the legal drinking age here is 18. Recently I was at a party with my parents in the city and since I look young and I had to have my parents tell the bartender repeatdely that I was over 18. I drank however ever 20 minutes some a**hole waiter/waitress who did not know i was 18 would grab me by the arm (physical abuse) and yell at me while pooring my drink out, ofcourse in french although I am english (verbal abuse) The owner appologized to me twice saying that you look young and if a cop comes in here and you do not have i.d we get shut down. I did not carry around i.d with me b/c why should i? My father was paying for the party and my parents were there. The owner was one of the people that was yelling at me the whole time. I could not enjoy myself at my bro's b-mitzvah. Do you consider this mistreatment? Should I demand an appology close to 48 hrs after the fact?

no, i think they did the right thing by trying to cover their ***. Too bad you didnt have your ID. Maybe you'd rather they escorted you out of your brothers party for drinking without an ID.

You sound very irresponsible... you owe THEM an apology for being beligerant and not following the law and showing ID.

You are lucky that even though your parents vouched for you that you got served to begin with. I'm not sure of the laws in Canada, but I tended bar for many years here in the states and if we got caught serving a minor we got shut down along with tickets and fines for not only the owner(s) but the servers as well. Get yourself a thin wallet or money clip to carry with you next time.

And as far as your added details, you changed your story as to why you weren't carrying your ID. First it was " I did not carry around i.d with me b/c why should i? My father was paying for the party and my parents were there." But then you said you didn't want to carry it because you were dressed nice. Just carry your ID with you.

The permissible age for drinking should never be the issue. The issue should be how responsible the citizen is. Not only you but your parents have also shown immaturity by siding with you, against the law. "Right of admission is reserved" in all the restaurants and the owners were absolutely right in their demand for identification and age proof.

Next time when you go where you need to drink, do not forget to carry your age proof and be sensible, drink in moderation.
Cheers !

Darn, it's hard to be young... Considering that the drinking age is where you live, I guess that's the age it should be. but the more obvious question is "should I be carrying the ID?", to which the answer is an unequivocal YES. You just got the reason why... it's the only way to avoid just the hassle you got.

Unfortunately, just because your father was paying for the party doesn't absolve the bartender, waitress, and cops for doing their job... THEY are personally responsible for your death if you were to die in a drunken driving accident, or if you killed someone else. Your father hired them, in part, to pass the responsibility to them. They were only doing their job.

Should you demand an apology?, no... They were doing their job, like it or not, and you not carrying your proof of age was asking for the hassle you got.

The legal age here in the US is 21. I used to work in a hotel bar, parents would come in with their kids, if the kids didn't have an ID, I never took the parents word for it that their kid was 21. My job was on the line, the liqour license for the bar was on the line. Parents would get angry, get nasty with me but the LAW is to check the ID. If I had taken the parents word, served the kid, the kid has an accident, I would be held liable. And I'm sure the parents wouldn't stick up for ME at that point.
If you want to drink, carry your ID. The owners of the establishment have every right to choose who not to serve and why.

she was outta line but the manager did apologize. What else do you want him to do ? That is her job to make sure there covering their own butt. If you look younger then you are you should carry I.D. with you, to not run into this prob. again. YEAH drinking age should be 25 if not older! everywhere too!

with drinking also comes responsibility. it is your responsibility to have your i.d. with you when you are out. that is the only way to prove your age. if you don't want hassled take your i.d. .. drinking age should be 21 because of immaturity
