I've just been looking at several other questions and on one side Americans have posted about how they 'saved' the UK during the second world war (which is true) but on the other they were stating the reason for killing native Americans were because the colonists were all British. Equally, i see a lot of Americans bashing the French, and yet they forget it was the french who came to their aid during the war with the British. Do you not think that Americans (or indeed all countries) look at history in a convinient way?

Most of the people on this site are young, and perhaps not as educated as they could be. The colonists being British is not a reason for killing the natives; it's just that a lot of Brits on this site are quick to call Americans blood thirsty tyrants, forgetting(conveniently) that those tyrants came from Britain. Some Americans do have a selective memory when it comes to our history, but mostly they're just being defensive. It's not easy being despised by the entire world; sometimes we just get pissed off about it. Thanks for calling us Americans, not "yanks". I think it's a derrogatory term on par with any racial slur you can think of.

You are absolutely right. I'm glad you reminded everyone about the French saving us during the Revolutionary War. I think the problem is that most people complain about hating the subject of history but don't realize how important it is so that we can keep a true perspective on the present. And as far as being convenient, I also believe that a lot of our history has been rewritten to overlook any bad things that we may have done while blaming others in doing the same thing. I do love my country but I wish we weren't so full of ego sometimes.

To answer this question most people have a very limited knowledge of history in general. Those of us that have studied history do remember french involvement in the revolutionary war. Also we do not blame the mass extinctions of native americans on being british...any more than the Australians or South Africans blame there treatment of indigenous populations on English influence.
Now as to why Americans in general cant stand the french thats easy, bad manners, bad body odor, and this rather unusual french trait to act superior to Americans when they have barely got the taste from licking German boots out of there mouths from WWII.

We all do. There are many was to look at any point in history. Take the native Americans. If you look at it from the point that the Indians sided against the US 1776 1812 and the civil war you see it a little different. Not until ww1 and ww2 did they fight with the US.

history is constantly rewritten so that it helps the viewpoint of whomever is in charge. the best example being christopher columbus "discovered" a continent that had been inhibited for centuries. americans love to talk about how dominating they were in WWII, but rarely like to bring up their loss in vietnam. Japan, Italy and Germany usually act like they were never in WWII. It's all about the politics of the time. China right now is trying to phase out all references to the great revolution, since the haves are outnumbered by the havenots almost 3-1.

Britain bashes the French too. It's just for fun, right? We appreciate the help they gave us in prior centuries, we won't be needing their services again however. I make no excuses for our poor treatment of native americans. Britain is a valuable ally for us, we do still need each other.

Naturally they do, as with daily news papers. All the world describes their own history how they would like you to know it.
