Any samples you could provide would be appreciated. Also, The decision is going to be almost immediate. Would it be proper to leave it on the interviewee's desk since we work in the same building? Mail won';t reach them before the decision is made.

At this point I would not do it - the thank you note should have gone out within 24-48 hours of the interview. It should be mailed or sent via internal mail. Just dropping it off on their desk would not be my choice for how to do it.

For future reference -
Not only should you thank them for the interview, you need to use this as one more opportunity to influence the decision. This can be done by
~ correcting something you said in the interview that you wish you had said differently
~ adding something that you forgot to bring up in the interview
~ reinforcing your main selling points

If you are friends with the interviewer, you are the interviewee, leave a handwritten note. If you aren't, an short email will do. VERY short and sweet. These folks are probably busy.

Dear ___________,

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for the _______ position.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Keep it simple and keep it hand-written. Two or three sentences hand written on a nice, professional thank you card beat the typical email hands down.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION. I'M HOPEFUL I'LL HAVE THE CHANCE TO PROVE MY TALENTS AS YOUR NEW BLAH-BLAH-BLAH IN THE COMING WEEKS. CALL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS.
